Just been looking to get a car for B-I-L for August. All booked out. Any spare for the odd day are 90€.

That was a week's price normally.
Not only did they sell off most of their inventory, but they assumed they could "just buy new ones" when needed... Then they found out about the shortage of chips leading to tens of thousands of new vehicles being parked up awaiting chips.. The local Ford dealer looks like an empty car park & the 2 acre or so storage field for the Toyota dealer had six vehicles in it last time I drove past.
That doesn't apply here. They don't use new cars. Most hire cars were ratty 4 & 5 years old jobbies.

https://covid19.ca.gov/state-dashboard/

Update for July 29, 2021
As of July 29, California has 3,830,008 confirmed cases of COVID-19, resulting in 63,891 deaths.

CASES
3,830,008 total
7,457 today
14.2 new cases per 100K

DEATHS
63,891 total
42 today
0.03 new deaths per 100K

TESTS
73,381,744 total
129,545 today
6.2% test positivity
The math I quoted from the media today came from Ch5 KTLA (also known as KKKTLA as they are a bunch of left wing race baiting assholes). Notice that your numbers don't mention that anyone recovered.
Not sure where people are getting tested these days, they closed all the testing centers weeks ago. Notice that we've apparently had 73,381,744 tests among a population of fewer than 40,000,000.. so about 55% have been tested more than once & are counted twice..

This website states about 2M recovered.. which would give us a 50% recovery rate & we know that's bullshit:

When agencies publish numbers they need to stop assuming people are all idiots. If you have an impressive number with a vague description of what it means then people will quite rightly suspect it. If people suspect your numbers then explain them, calling them stupid won't work and makes them more suspicious.
I've just watched a news article on climate change that I don't disbelieve but the meteorologists make claims that most people can see problems with, rather than anything nefarious I think they have some sort of superiority complex where they should be believed purely because they are the experts. That or they don't understand it themselves and are bluffing.
The UK covid numbers look reliable to me, they are a long slog through all the charts but that means I trust them.

I just caught a headline that the Center for Disarray & Confusion has just "reversed testing among the vaccinated".. but no idea what that entails as I have no clue what they were reversed from...

I think the numbers being given by LA DPH & the media could be vastly improved if they just employed ONE person who could both use a calculator AND had taken a statistics class.

Latest is that 99% of the people in hospital are unvaccinated... & that 75% of the new cases are unvaccinated...
And that the hospital rate for the unvaccinated is allegedly 0.25%

Given that they are finding 25% of new cases are among the vaccinated, I assume this means they WERE being tested.. & now won't be.

This will allow them to claim that 100% of new cases are among the unvaccinated... Brilliant!

That on it's own is another useless number, it needs a few more to mean much.

Au contraire.. They must have been testing the vaccinated to come up with the 25% claim.. but they are now reversing what they were doing. The opposite of being tested is NOT being tested. (& I edited that post btw)

Where were they thinking of buying ratty replacements from?

As I said, I looked but couldn't find official / validated sources (rather than hearsay from news outlets).

Perhaps you know better where to look. The info must be somewhere.

We in blighty really don't give a flying fuck about your endless rants about where you live. Go complain to your local Congressman. If that doesn't work then either do the time honoured Merkin thing and pick up and use a shooter, or STFU.

Easy tiger, while I pretty much agree with you, he can within reason post what he likes. I've had words with him before but he's not the only one who doesn't do much in the way of bike talk and rants politics. It could be argued you're not far behind him in that context.
The fact he lives in the US is not something we can hold against him, people from everywhere are welcome here.

Sure, he's a bit well, strange. .

Well to me he is, but we can't make people stop posting just because they're strange.
