Through some quirk of nature, I do not naturally float - my swimming teacher though it was very strange . I can do a good slightly under the water float - unfortunately that includes my head

I don't either in fresh water, I think women float better. If I stay motionless in a pool I sink to the bottom, which is why I thought the RNLI advice was a bit misleading as they are only interested in salt water.

I was looking for something vaguely scientific about floating in fresh water and found this, interesting to read how breathing in different water types can both kill you hours later. I guess if you do get saved and your lungs pumped out then hospital is still a good idea.

The only thing I could find that didn't look entirely heresay was Portsmouth Uni with the RNLI and it only looked at coastal water.

Yeah that's the rub really, experience is the key to that, but obviously the people with the least experience are the ones that die.

As with the bike training thread, ideally it will give you enough experience (which you can keep 'fresh') to get through it.

I've been in some gnarly situations in the ocean that I thought were sketchy but really seasoned watermen would probably just think it was business as usual.

IE: they've 'normalised' the risk levels so that their perceived 'acceptable risk' is far more risky than someone elses.

Much like bikers who've ridden fast all their lives without too many accidents.

If you've got 7kts of tide coming at you on a rising tide then there's no point even setting off in my boat, you'll be sailing and going backwards.
