My parents made bloody sure I could swim as ever since I was a toddler I have a habit of marching into the sea/falling in as soon as I see it. It really should be in parental 101 to teach your kids to swim (along with the dangers of water).

It does seem to me that ethnic minorities (as in this case and another on Camber Sands a few years ago) may have a cultural thing that stops them learning to swim and also being "water wise".

Another thing is the lack of Government Safety Broadcasts like we had in the 70's for dial 999 and ask for coast guard and don't play in Quarries etc. These should be all over social media as well as TV (it should be part of the broadcast licence/UK internet) and they should "scare the willies" out of kids and parents. No cotton wool or wrapping it up nicely but stark and brutal.

It’s also a huge shame no one was around, it wouldn’t have taken much to save them, if me and my lad had been there, or any couple of people that could swim, then no one would have died - it’s not like it was the ocean with nasty currents, big swell and rocks.

Do not underestimate the blind panic and desperation a drowning person has, I'm not saying don't go in to help BUT be very aware you are trying to rescue a dying animal, not a thinking human that will listen to instructions, many a would be rescuer has also become victim after getting tangled up in the drowning.

People are stupid and reckless, they don't follow safety procedures even when they're being paid to, I've worked in dangerous environments for most of my working life, I've seen people ignore safety procedures and not wear PPE for most of that time, the main reason appears to be laziness, as I've got older I've realised 5 minutes getting changed into PPE is worth while, and another 5 minutes spent checking equipment, gas testing or clipping a harness on is time well spent, and if the job takes longer because of this it doesn't matter because you're getting paid.

And that is what children should be taught from a very young age. When they are confident enough to do that under any circumstances that have landed them in water, then teach them to swim.

I'm a shite swimmer tbh, I don't really see any sense in it as I'm usually out on a boat and if that's in trouble it'll probably stay afloat for longer than I can swim. If it's more than a couple of miles off shore then I'd rather stay with the boat than try and swim to land.

I never go out in my kayaks without a pfd because although I can roll one back up, if I do end up out of the boat then the increased bouyancy will be a big bonus to getting myself sorted. I never sail my dinghy without wearing a pfd for the same reason. I tend not to wear one when I'm rowing though although it'll be in the boat. My boats are hard to sink as they have added bouyancy and in general most boats will float for far longer than you'd think unless it was a very serious incident that got it sinking. Swimming is for me, flippin' hard work. I'm good at floating though.

I didn't see the one where the boy gets the laces of his football boots stuck on the rails and he gets hit by a train. That's the one I remember the most.

That said , getting commercial fisherman to west lifejackets is major struggle. Education has been tried - but if they fall in wearing their normal fishing gear ( i.e welly boots) then their survival time is very short. So it is not just landlubbers that are affected

My wife's family have been commercial fishermen for generations and the general consensus is that if you go overboard and you're not immediately yanked back out again then you're dead anyway, a life jacket won't matter, at least where they go fishing anyway. Her grandfather was lost at sea, he went over in bad weather and was never seen again.

I'd put one on, but I've heard the same said from sailors in cold and rough seas, they know if they go over then it's very unlikely that they're going to survive it, life jacket or not, you've got about half an hour to survive in those conditions.

When we were kids we used to wear wet suits and just go off, getting dragged out was a buzz, looking back it was sketchy at times but if you were knackered you could just lay back and you'd float because of the suit. Out here I don't bother, I could float indefinitely in the sea here, sharks are rare, so the main problem would be dying of dehydration if you were too far to swim in, a life jacket won't help with that.

I'm sure I was told (back when I used to spend summers sailing on the south coast) that many/most fishermen, back then, didn't learn to swim deliberately as if they could swim it just took them longer to die :O

You'll need a diver, not a swimmer.

I don't know about the current generation of fisherman but the previous lot were of the don't learn to swim you only prolong your death persuasion.

And a large proportion had their flies open when recovered. Piss in a bucket and chuck it over the side, down wind preferably, don't piss over the stern.
