Re: Covid restrictions - are you adhering or not?
The thing I find really strange is that I've had the Pfizer vaccine - as has my SDad and Brother. Currently, they can visit here and go back to the uk with no quarantine issues
But if I go to the UK I have to quarantine because I haven't had the vaccine 'in the UK'. It's made by the same sodding company!
It pisses me off as I want to see my family. I've missed a few events, and really want to visit (and I need to get the damned transit back to the UK).
Here's hoping that by September quarantine will not be necessary (I've nowhere to go for quarantine, Dad's place is too small and SIL has a high risk job - whilst we are all double jabbed, it's not worth the risk) and I can do a three day visit for my sis' 50th and see family then come back here as quick as possible.
But I do think that is quite unlikely
Covid has had a MASSIVE effect on my life. The lockdowns closed the resorts at the start, so everyone I know, and me, had to stop work, close up, and not go out
The last winter was basically a write off for the people I know with businesses; yes some French visited, but you couldn't go into bars or restaurants, so if it was too cold to stand outside, no one made any money
We are all desperate for as many as possible to be vaccinated so that we could actually have a winter season this winter. But as a lot of us rely on UK tourists for our businesses, I am watching the UK with horror but also crossing my fingers that maybe somehow they are right and all will be well.
Who knows?
It just sux

That won't work.Potter wrote: ↑Wed Jul 14, 2021 2:08 pm Only UK passport holders can enter the UK and only if...
They have a negative test.
They are vaccinated.
They have a home to go to where they can quarantine for 10 days without putting anyone at risk.
They agree to an ankle tracking device that will monitor their whereabouts for the 10 days quarantine.
£50k fine and 6 months in jail if you go out
Half the idiots that constitute a big risk will ignore the tag (or know how to defeat it)
We will need a massive prison expansion to cope, and the £50K fine will be paid at £2 per month.

Re: Covid restrictions - are you adhering or not?
The newest 'no more surgeons' includes:
We find ourselves looking at the current batch of COVID patients in ICU and rationalising their reason for admission. Some have refused to be vaccinated, either due to a reluctance to accept that COVID was a threat or even that it exists at all. Others have worried about vaccine side-effects and have delayed getting their second jab. Those who have been vaccinated twice all have a potential ‘explanation’ for the failure of the vaccine to protect them. Most often this is because they have a medical condition that causes them to be immunosuppressed or have to take immunosuppressive medication, such as steroid tablets, to keep an existing medical condition in check. Finding such explanations makes us all feel a little better. It reassures us that people without underlying risk factors, such as ourselves, colleagues, friends and family members are still very unlikely to become ill with COVID-19 and end up needing Critical Care. It’s also very common for ICU staff to try to rationalise what is happening around them in order to make sense of what, at times, can be a very chaotic environment. Being able to analyse, explain and justify why a particular patient has ended up in ICU gives us all the illusion that we still have some control over what happens in our lives. We don’t want to believe that any of it is simply down to bad luck.
We have also seen cases of vaccine ‘failure‘ amongst our own staff. There are a number of doctors and nurses who have become infected with COVID-19 despite being vaccinated twice. None of them is seriously unwell.

I have faith in neither "the gov" nor my "fellow residents", but nice try at trying to put words into my mouth.DefTrap wrote: ↑Wed Jul 14, 2021 10:13 amWe're all playing guessing games here. I'm just looking at solutions that suit me because clearly the amount of 'control' is going to drop off rapidly now - if I'm wrong probably all I end up with is a 10 day holiday in Majorca that I wasn't either anticipating or really wanting. Oh and covid.
What's impressive is your faith in the gov and your fellow residents not to fvck this up now.
IIRC your "Gaff" is in Cambridge, so this is the Cambridge dictionary edition.

Works for a Cuban tour operator, they only sell holidays to Cuba. Or did. They've just started to get a few bookings for Sep but this'll probably knacker it. Mrs is furloughed but was hoping enough bookings might come in before Sep

Out of curiosity, when you say ‘very ill’, what does that mean?
Hope they recover soon.

You mean our vaccines actually work?
Lots of data is available on the government website if you're interested. Here's a snippet...
https://assets.publishing.service.gov.u ... eek_27.pdf
Several studies have estimated the effectiveness against hospitalisation in older adults, all of which indicate higher levels of protection against hospitalisation after a single dose than that seen against symptomatic disease, around 75 to 85% after 1 dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine (3, 8, 9, 10). Data on VE against hospitalisation with 2 doses for all ages with the Alpha variant is shown in the week 26 Vaccine
Data is also emerging which suggests high levels of protection against mortality. Studies linking community COVID-19 testing data, vaccination data and mortality data indicate that both the Pfizer-BioNTech and Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccines are around 70 to 85% effective at preventing death with COVID-19 after a single dose (3, 11). Vaccine effectiveness against mortality with 2 doses of the Pfizer vaccine is around 95 to 99% and with 2 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine around 75 to 99% (week 26 Vaccine Surveillance Report).
So basically, as if you didn't already know, getting jabbed is a good idea!

Re: Covid restrictions - are you adhering or not?
Yebbut my mate Terry the Cabbie on Facebook knows a geezer who's uncle works at a secret government laboratory in Barking and he says that the people who are jabbed are more susceptible to gamma radiation leaking from Venus and the only way to stop Coronavirus, which doesn't exist anyway, is to line your trainers with tin foil (shiny side up, oviously, you fuckin' mug) as Sadiq Kahn has a control tower in Wapping with a computer that can stop your feet dead in their tracks so the police can fine you for loitering and it's just another form of pedestrian Congestion Charge. Or something.Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Thu Jul 15, 2021 8:40 am

Re: Covid restrictions - are you adhering or not?
I read similar the other day. No vaccine is full proof so at some point in the UK the majority of hospitalisations will be double jabbed. The hope is not as ill as they would have been. At least that was what some Doc said in the article.
All a bit canary in the coal mine at the min and we won't know what's what for a few months minimum.

Re: Covid restrictions - are you adhering or not?
TBF no-one has ever claimed it will. Right from the start 'they' have been saying 60% effective, 90% effective, whatever.....
They're all foreign in the UK to one extent or another.

Re: Covid restrictions - are you adhering or not?
That's not true in the UK at the moment. The majority of the population have been jabbed but the majority in hospital have not been jabbed. In the local ICU there's currently no one that has been double jabbed (or doesn't have a co-morbidity that puts them there). There are a few young ones (20s/30s)that have refused or not bothered to get jabbed though.
As time goes on and more people get jabbed there will be people that have been double jabbed that end up in ICU - hopefully the numbers will be tiny compared to what they would have otherwise been.
I don't think it ever has been claimed that it is.

Re: Covid restrictions - are you adhering or not?
Surely once everyone is jabbed (and assuming the protection is decent, +80%) then the chance of catching it and therefore passing it on drops off a cliff?

Well yeah that's the idea in general innit? That's why we still jab for Measles and what not right?
