Energica’s giant leap: New EMCE motor promises greater power and range
https://www.motorcyclenews.com/news/202 ... ric-motor/
Energica have announced a new electric motor, which they say offers a considerable improvement in all areas.
The motor, dubbed the EMCE, has been co-engineered with the Italian company Mavel, a research and development business that specialises in electronics. Mavel have done lots of work with cars before but this project was their first foray into the two-wheel world.
"Innovation is the main strength of our technical department which, together with Mavel, has found the perfect collaboration to push the limits of current technology, further improving an already high-performing product," says Giampiero Testoni, Chief Technology Officer of Energica.
As part of their work, Mavel were able to optimise Energica’s motor design with the specific goal of minimising energy losses. They did this through software changes, such as new control algorithms, as well as through hardware innovation, such as a new rotor design that creates in internal airflow to cool the magnets.
The result is a claimed peak power increase to 168bhp from 134bhp, a reduction in weight of 10kg and a range increase of up to 10%. The motor is also now liquid cooled, rather than oil cooled, which Energica says delivers more consistent performance as well a subtle improvement to the handling.
Interestingly Energica say that they brought the introduction of the EMCE motor forward because of pandemic-related supply chain issues, having completed development work in just six months.
The result is that the motor will now be standard fitment on all Energicas currently in production. The Energica range starts from £17,690 for the EsseEsse9, jumping up to £25,190 Ribelle.

Expect more stuff like this, EV tech is gonna come on in leaps over the next few years. It's going to be a problem, your bike will be out of date almsot as soon as you buy it!
25% power increase and a 10kg weight saving (on something that's nothing like as heavy as a petrol engine to start with) us a pretty sizable gain.

I'd like an electric motored trail bike, 40bhp would be more than enough, 100 miles range, with an hours recharge time and the whole bike weighing under 130 KG please.
Designers would be better off working on an A2 compliant motor, how many people buy an £18K bike?

Re: Energica’s giant leap: New EMCE motor promises greater power and range
The way batteries work means you're gonna see lots of big power EVs, making little 40bhp ones doesn't really save much.
Range needs a big battery, big batteries intrinsically produce lots of power too. Its almost like the size of the hsoe coming out of the fuel tank is linked to the capacity of the tank.
Once you've got the powerful battery fitted you might as well install a powerful motor. Its not like with petrol engines, a 200bhp motor will happily produce 30bhp and still be efficient. OK so it might only be 96% efficient rather than the 98% it could be with a smaller motor, but when you consider a petrol engine is only 30-40% efficient at best, who cares about dropping from 98 to 96?
The batteries are currently also the biggest single cost, so getting a long range vehicle means spending lots on batteries. Who's gonna buy an £18k bike with 40bhp? We're conditioned to think expesnive bikes should be really fast even if we can only do the speed limit

I wonder who's going to buy an £18K electric bike, regardless of power, it would need to be better than an R1M

Your better might be different to some else's better.Le_Fromage_Grande wrote: ↑Fri Jul 09, 2021 11:53 am I wonder who's going to buy an £18K electric bike, regardless of power, it would need to be better than an R1M
Your better is probably lighter/faster/better handling than an R1M.
To a yoghurt weaver less baby murdering fossil fumes is better.

I have to say, stepping from an electric car into a petrol/diesel one - even a nice petrol one - feels like stepping back about 100 years! It's night a day different IME. Now whether or not you think that difference is good is personal choice, but EVs feel a lot more modern to me.
As James May put it; What if, one day, the sound of a petrol engine means your car is, whisper it.....slow?".
The times are certainly changing!

Are they working on anything which makes proper 'brum, brum' noises? That whiney shit is an epic fail.
And don't go telling me I'm a dinosaur and the yoof don't care. I see/hear enough hot hatches around here with holes poked in the back box all piloted by scoop capped rapster wannabes.

Do you know any yoghurt-weaving motorcyclists? IME they are rare beasts.KungFooBob wrote: ↑Fri Jul 09, 2021 11:58 am Your better might be different to some else's better.

I know a few. IME lots of young people are veggie and EV driving and all the rest of it. I even know a couple of vegan motorcyclists.
The demographic on here (not the same as THE demographic on here of course) is very narrow.

I have no problem with near silent electric motors, nor do I mind instant torque.Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Fri Jul 09, 2021 12:02 pm

My problem is with range, charging time, and charging infrastructure. And with £18k motorcycles.
