2001 ZX10R (DF6) de cat problem

Post by IanB »

A mate has replaced the failed catalytic converter on his ZX10R with a Delkevic de cat pipe, refitted the lamba sensor wires to the new pipe & the engine now runs fine. However he now has a warning message flashing on the dashboard.

He's done a search on the internet (very dangerous...) & the Kawasaki forums are split almost 50/50 between "its all fine just get an eliminator to switch the message off" & "don't ride it, the bike won't be happy & will shut down & leave you stranded"

Anyone on here know about such things?

Or can someone recommend a decent workshop within 20 miles of Bath who could put it on a diagnostic system?

The first ZX10R was 2004. :wtf: So supposing the 2001 was a typo...

I junked the cat off my Z1000 and fitted straight through headers, refitted the O2 sensor and everything seemed ok,no fault codes. But all that is really a temporary measure,to get the bike running and fuelling correctly it needs the ECU flashed and preferably a dyno run. Usually in the region of £300 - 400.

After a decat the bike will be running lean through most of the rev range and usually rich at the top end. Messing about with O2 sensor eliminators won't do any harm, but they won't fix anything apart from putting out a warning light. Running an engine too lean for long will do harm.

I thought my bike ran fine before the flash, but it was a real eye opener to feel the change.

Skub makes very good sense…

Recently converting a ZX10R to a track bike I went through the same issues. Some components to correct the parts you remove you can buy online i.e electric dampers, I removed mine to fit a proper one so needed a component to trick the bike into thinking it was still fitted, O2 eliminators, etc but it’s not until the ECU was flashed that all the codes were cleared and the bike set up Accordingly

That's the one. 04 and 05 was the C1,then the wheelbarrow came in 06 and 07.

His model also had a servo for the exhaust flap and they were always quick to throw a fault if badly adjusted or sticky cables. On my ZX10R I just removed the cables and left the motor under the seat, that way it thought it was still working.

Servo removal fine on the zx6 too, you can buy a servo buddy, which turns the light off.

This is one of the better write ups I've seen explaining Open/Closed Loop injection...

https://motofomo.com/open-loop-vs-close ... injection/

Defo worth a read.

I'm more of a carburettor & radiator guy myself so I find this interesting, if a little bit witchcrafty!

Thanks for all the advice, the bike is booked into JHS Racing in Bristol for a re flash & dyno run. Should be a happy Kawasaki in time for Pembrey :banana-wrench:
