NZ closed its borders and locked down hard and early. Boris dithered about each lockdown, left borders open, and delayed restricting arrivals from India.

Lots of things could happen, should we remain locked down just in case some unforseable future event might happen? Get a grip.wheelnut wrote: ↑Tue Jul 06, 2021 7:36 amThe issue, and one the gov will be terrified of, with letting it run wild is that it will produce a lot more mutations. One of which could cause an issue.irie wrote: ↑Mon Jul 05, 2021 10:10 pm It's the hospitalisation and mortality rates that matters, not per se the total number of infections.
Currently about 1,900 in hospital* and 9 deaths within 28 days of having Covid.
Ffs, can't anyone use their fucking brains? No, don't answer that.

God knows I’m not defending Boris, but NZ is hardly the global hub that the UK is. By the time NZ shut its borders the virus was well seeded in the UK. Both Aus and NZ had the luxury of time and being a little more remote.

Calm down
I don’t disagree. The virus will do what it does. I was just pointing out what the government will be quietly shitting themselves about. But, as it stands, we need to rely on the vaccinations and get on with life.
The delta variant had backed us into a corner where our only two realistic options are a full, proper lockdown or to open up, rely on the vaccines, and get on with it.

No i'm not complaining that boris has locked us down.wheelnut wrote: ↑Tue Jul 06, 2021 4:21 pmSorry Greenie - you;re not making any sense.
You're praising NZ for having few cases due to extremely draconion lockdowns and border controls but complaining that Boris has locked us down?
Lockdown and restrictions reduce cases, no lockdowns and the cases grow. Unfortunately we can't have it both ways so which way would you prefer?
I am complaining about the way he has locked us down.
We are humans so we need to be controlled and we need to be lead by people that know what the fuck is going on in society. They are the ones telling us what to do after all.
I just want some sensibility in the way our leaders direct us to live.

So what would you have viewed as a sensible approach, imagine you didn’t have the benefit of hindsight?

Smacks of a bit of dictatorship to me.
They used to say that there were 60 million sheep in N.Z. and 3 million of them thought they were humans.
It's easy to control sheep and clearly those in government there recognise that. The UK is not quite the same kettle or the same fish.

I don't have the answers i'm afraid.
I don't think anyone does, how can they?...
But we can still be happy and enjoy the world for many many years yet, unless we let insensibility set into our society so deep that the world just becomes some sort of distopian zombie film!

It's worse than chess watching some of your... arguments take a month.... 1 post every 3-4 hours with partial arguments of "oh no i didn't"
Come on, we're better than this ... aren't we ?

Re: Covid restrictions - are you adhering or not?
This morning I deleted the NHS Covid 19 app.
My reasons are as follows:
The major groups of vulnerable people have now been, for the most part, vaccinated. Job done. Happy with that.
The country is now opening up again, albeit when the cases are increasing, but hospital admissions are way, way down on where they were this time six months ago. See above re vaccinations. Happy days.
The govt., if not now bringing in herd immunity by the back door, then certainly via the tradesman's entrance, (which I have no problem with given the above) are now anticipating c. 100k new cases a day. That means that the chances of being pinged on the app will rise exponentially to the point where people, most of whom will not be subject to self-isolating in any way a few weeks later. Personally, I feel that this is a little counter intuitive, when we're emerging the from lockdown, that suddenly I'm going to have to sit indoors at great inconvenience to my family, colleagues, etc. no no other reason that somebody went into Sainsbury's an hour after I did. Factor this by the number of new cases and the massive drag on the country, just when things should be getting better.
Selfish? Probably. I'm happy to abide by rules when I can see a clear and beneficial reason to do so, but what was announced yesterday makes no sense to me.
Flame away.

And there was me worrying about public transport overcrowding:
TBF there were three people on the flight, all seated in the back row. For trimming apparently.

IME these places are few and far between. I have always used it previously, when I can, but on a number of occasions I have genuinely forgotten my phone (usually out walking the dog) and if we stop for a coffee my explanation is usually met with a shrug and I'm either ushered inside or I choose to sit outside. Some places have asked for a phone number, which I'll happily give, but how this works in practice, in respect of efficacy of contacting people, I have my serious doubts.

I have a few DJ mates that are soon to travel to NZ to play some gigs, fully open no social distancing, they are quite excited.Potter wrote: ↑Wed Jul 07, 2021 3:38 amOZ is a mess, I don' know about NZ because I don't have friends there, but my friends in Oz have told me the situation and there is a lot of unhappiness, families torn apart by the strange lockdowns and border controls, most other people in urban areas really pissed off - and they've still got to deal with covid, all they've done is kicked the can down the road for a bit.
Their vaccine programme won't be anywhere near until mid-2022 and so for the next year at least, whilst the rest of the world moves, they've got to sit in the corner scared and isolated and try to fend off covid on their borders with a broom handle. It will be 2023 until they're in a position to have the sort of options the UK has - and I'm not claiming the UK are making the right decision, that will need to be seen, but at least they have options, whereas Oz really has none.
I'll agree that the UK international movement policy has been a mess from start to finish, that stands as a decent point on it's own, you don't need to compare it to Oz, because in the opinion of many the Ozzy policy is worse.
Playing here in the UK is just rubbish at the moment.
