The Entertainment Industry
What's your thoughts on how the Government has played the rules around Covid and mainly here, our Music Culture?
Hopefully come July 19th we will all be able to have fun again in clubs and other currently restricted venues without any restrictions or vaccine passports but for how long?
I so hope this will be the opening of the entertainment industry again for good and we can all have fun and start living again, for we are a tribal race and no matter of money orientated greed can ever illiminate that from our lives!...

Re: The Entertainment Industry
I have zero interest in blaming one politico or another, they rarely give me pause for thought,so I've no interest in pointless political dissection of events all with the benefit of hindsight.
What I will say is,folk who have long relied on gigging as their sole income found themselves suddenly with no income at all and no offer of help. The outfit I played in before retiring became a busy 3 piece and before Covid they declared yearly earnings of 50k to the taxman. That suddenly went to zero.
I know several long time working musicians who are finished, because they had to find other work to pay the bills and they won't be back.
I'm not interested in accountability,it was/is a pandemic and shit happens. Entertainers of any kind are way down the list of important things when people are dying.
That's just my perspective of the effect on working musos.

Re: The Entertainment Industry
Last weekend the “entertainment industry” decided to have an illegal rave up at Steyning Bowl. Apart from the fights with police, the noise, the damage caused to the location, and the total disregard for anyone who lives anywhere near,
I cycle past there yesterday - the arseholes have left heaps of litter, black bags - and huge piles of shit, real human shit.
So I am not feeling any empathy towards that sector of the population.

But people's rights to get stoned and rave all weekend has been denied. They should all get £M in compensation.

After many years of maximising profits by sticking people into the most cramped and unhygienic spaces possible I have limited sympathy for the hospitality industry.

Re: The Entertainment Industry
Do you also feel the same for the mass meeting without social distancing at Ascot etc as well as the the Football idiots in the streets meeting in hoards at the moment or are you bigoted against just music fans?Mr Moofo wrote: ↑Fri Jul 02, 2021 10:38 pm Last weekend the “entertainment industry” decided to have an illegal rave up at Steyning Bowl. If they were self employed at it and have three years or more of tax returns to show they should have been eligible for a grant which was at about 80 (first one) or 70% of their total income for an equivalent length period. Usually three monthly although there was a maximum amount.Skub wrote: ↑Fri Jul 02, 2021 10:16 pm I have zero interest in blaming one politico or another, they rarely give me pause for thought,so I've no interest in pointless political dissection of events all with the benefit of hindsight.

A few people who routinely fiddle their taxes to lessen how much they pay got caught out with that one.

Yeah, fuck 'em basically. If you're gonna creatively report your numbers so you don't pay tax you can hardly go cap in hand to the tax man when you need it.demographic wrote: ↑Sun Jul 04, 2021 7:52 pm If they were self employed at it and have three years or more of tax returns to show they should have been eligible for a grant which was at about 80 (first one) or 70% of their total income for an equivalent length period. Unless you're a multi billion dollar company of course

Re: The Entertainment Industry
Am I mistaken, or is that a reference to a certain comedy item from the early/mid 1970s?

Re: The Entertainment Industry
it's not trolling, it's a serious point.
If you're not reporting your numbers accurately to evade tax (note evade, not avoid) then why should you expect any help from the taxman?
If you weren't making enough money to make a profit then what were you living on before? You clearly don't need government help 'cause you've managed thus far making a loss.
I'm sure that plenty of people doing casual gigging felt pretty good about the fact they weren't doing a workaday 9 to 5. Well - this is the flip side of the coin isn't it? Can't have it both ways.

You have come into a thread to purposely try and get a reaction from me by posting and alluding to things that have nothing to do with this thread.
Do you seriously have such a sad life that all you can think of doing is goading people on the internet for no good reason, it really makes you look a bit sad doesn't it?
Oh, and just for your records, which you seem to keep on anyone that doesn't reach your privately educated standards on here, i am now PAYE...

Re: The Entertainment Industry
No I haven't. You asked what people think of the way the government has handled the entertainment industry. I'm not trying to goad you.
I went to an inner city comprehensive which went on to 'Special Measures' the year after I leftanyone that doesn't reach your privately educated standards

Re: The Entertainment Industry
I'll be happy to see the entertainment industry back up and running. This country has done a great job in terms of getting the population vaccinated and, given that the aim was to protect the vulnerable groups in society, which has been achieved, the restrictions on our personal liberty should be removed at the earliest opportunity. If people want to stand in a sweaty dive bar and listen to shit bands, then they should be free to do so. I supported lockdown, but it's time to learn to live with this shit and get on with it. Can't believe there are people still dragging this out and saying we need to carry on wearing masks ad infinitum.
I am slightly biased as I have tickets for Easy Life which keeps getting postponed.

Re: The Entertainment Industry
I really, really miss gigs. Don't go to anywhere near as many as I used to since I moved out to Hertford and had kids, but I still used to see a fair few bands a year.
Do I want to go back....hmmmm. If I'm honest the thought of packing in shoulder to shoulder with 3k other metal heads in a sweaty club doesn't work for me right now. I think it's too much for me to want to risk it unless everyone was tested. So I'll probably be a coward and let other people be the guinea pigs for now. At the same time the thought of social distanced gigs doesn't work either. Rock/metal gigs much like Greenie's style of music I imagine thrives off the energy of the crowd without that it'd feel lifeless.
I've only got 1 gig planned which is a cancelled weekender from last year that we won tickets to. 6 of us in a caravan and on a holiday park in Nov with bands on Thurs-Sun night. Leaving my options open for now to see how things pan out. At the minute if it was 19th July rather than Nov I'd bail as I'd not be comfortable going, but I'll see how Covid pans out between now and then.
On the entertainment business overall it's much like the travel industry in some ways. My Mrs works for a Cuban tour operator and she's been furloughed since March last year, furlough runs out in Sep but at the moment everything is so up in the air with travel that the reality is it'll be a miracle if her firm survives or some of the airlines that they use. The one life line they have is that the Cuban season is Sep-March so they might be ok, but it's very hard to see them being viable unless stuff changes a lot between now and Sep.
I do hope though that the entertainment industry can open up as much as possible. I've been double jabbed so in theory I'm as protected as I'm gonna be and younger people will be less bothered than me about getting back out there so good luck to em.
