Lolz.
I found out today that castex (the PM) cancelled outdoor mask wearing over a week ago. Shame they haven't bothered taking the signs down.

Perhaps not taken down in case Delta aka Indian spreads in which case the signs will probably be required again.

LA has *suggested* we all start wearing masks again because of the Delta variant... & in the next breath stated that it's the 3rd most common variant.... So we don't need masks for the first two, just the third one. Then said that "cases are soaring" with 123 cases among 10 million people.
Pretty much got a universal "get fucked" response from the other 9,999,877 residents.

You may have overlooked it, but a week or two back I asked whether you had Variant Delta over there.

Here's an indication of what you may have to expect:

Luckily, the vaccines seem to vastly reduce the likelihood of hospitalisation and death. But they won't completely stop you contracting or spreading it.

No idea on how reliable this source is:

https://www.fox17.com/amp/news/local/te ... n-pandemic

74% of Tennessee Republicans think the 'pandemic is over' compared to 14% of Democrats

&

more than a third of Republicans said they don't plan to get vaccinated. However, 60% of Republicans and 94% of Democrats said they'd already been vaccinated against coronavirus.

Those who have refused the opportunity may wish to reconsider.

Yes, but as stated it's the 3rd most common. Amazing how the news here give a big spiel about how dangerous it is, how fast it's spreading etc, then almost as an afterthought mentioned the vaccines work against it & that we have 123 cases among 10 million...
Right now the media is doing all it can to shame the unvaccinated & rile up the vaccinated to bully those who chose not to get it... Pretty sure that's why LA County decided to come out with their "mask up again" suggestion. Not happening, they can go fuck themselves.

Fauci showed up on TV today, no idea what he said, I changed the channel.

LA County is showing a total of 256 cases over the past SIXTY DAYS. Oddly enough they still don't list one single person as having recovered from it.

https://news.google.com/covid19/map?hl= ... id=US%3Aen

The "huge surge" in cases is actually a 0.02% increase. I guess the media either assumes none of us can do math... or maybe no one in the media can do it.

Did you look at the chart? It wasn't the main variant here, either, a few weeks ago. But it's far more transmissible than other variants.

I live in deepest rural Berkshire. A few weeks ago, we were recording zero positive tests every day. Now it's back up to the high 20s several days recently.

And, for context, that's with most adults here having had both doses of vaccine.

The bottom line appears to be (at least here) that it's only affecting the unvaccinated.. which is the case for all the other variants too. There was brief mention on the news yesterday that LA is dealing with around a dozen different ones.

There were THREE covid deaths in the UK yesterday.. from all variants.

It may well be, although perhaps 'mainly' rather than 'only' and in % terms.

Edit. Have a read of this, a senior medico's description of how it's affecting a large British hospital:

https://www.nomoresurgeons.com/post/on-the-up

Last week the UK had the highest rate of new coronavirus cases in Europe despite its vaccination success. I’m not sure how accurate this statistic really is, as different nations test and record COVID cases in different ways. However, it does serve to highlight what a dramatic effect the Delta variant has had since its arrival on our shores in April. The threat posed by the arrival of further variants is very real and explains why nations may be reluctant to relax foreign travel restrictions for a while longer.

We now know that the Delta variant is 60% more infectious than the previous dominant Alpha variant. This explains how it has elbowed every other variant out of the way and now accounts for over 90% of all new cases in the UK. The incidence in European countries remains significantly lower but the EU Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) estimates that a similar prevalence of 90% will have been reached across Europe by the end of August.

The good news is that the rate of increase of these new cases has slowed over the past fortnight. Cases are currently doubling every 17 days with the biggest increases seen in younger age groups. The Delta variant appears to be associated with roughly double the risk of being admitted to hospital and so it’s a relief to find that, whilst hospital admissions are rising, they are not rising like they did at the beginning of the second wave. The rise in the number of COVID deaths is also much slower than we saw back then.

It is mass vaccination that we have to thank for this. Whilst we know that vaccines are not as effective against the Delta variant, we now know that one dose of either the Pfizer or the AstraZeneca vaccine appears to reduce your chance of becoming infected and hospitalised with COVID-19 by 75%. This risk is reduced by more than 92% if you have had two doses. Back in January when the Alpha variant was dominant, about 10% of all those infected with COVID-19 required admission to hospital. Currently, about 4% of all infections are requiring hospitalisation. At the peak of the second wave, about 25% of all patients admitted to hospital died but that figure is now about 10%. Patients in hospital this time around are younger and they are recovering quicker. Thankfully, far fewer of them are dying.

Purely out of curiosity, how many of us are doing regular rapid antigen tests? My employer has 'strongly advised' that anybody working in the office does two per week and has provided them via the NHS, though we're under no obligation to say whether we have or not, nor what the result is. They're very trusting.

Anyhow, I'm a dab hand at getting a swab up my nose these days. And no 'Rona to date. :banana-dance:

(Spoke to an acquaintance today who tells me a mutual friend, doubled jabbed and all, has the 'Rona. First person I know of who's been that unlucky, although by all accounts she's just a bit flu-ish)

All our age related restrictions were removed yesterday along with the general curfew of 9 (or 10) pm - 5 am. I'm not sure what the actual curfew start time was because I generally ignored it. :D

The village has had an influx of Ukrainian tourists but is chock full of Turkish tourists who unfortunately come by car. There are cars scattered everywhere, it's awful. But the locals are getting a little bit of business. They'd much prefer you British to come (you spend more money) but understand why you won't.

And today is Friday so the Turunç Bay Yacht Club will be meeting tonight, its first meeting for a long time. A few beers and watch Belgium vs Italy.

We've actually got a 10 day trip to Turkey booked (near Bodrum, IIRC) for August. I've got more chance of getting on the Love Island set I reckon, so I won't be spending my hard-earned scheckles there this year, unless by some miracle.

As for the footy. I'm torn. I love Italy, but I have Belgium in the sweep. Head vs. heart.

We are asked to test twice a week, Sunday and Wednesday evenings, and employer provides the kits. We aren't asked to report negative tests to 'The Agency' but relied on to report positives.
Our workplace was a Norfolk hot spot for 'rona, so much so they sent a bod out to check back in the peak.

I rarely go to Bodrum and when I do it's because there's a Decathlon store and almost next door a Marks and Spencer's. You can usually get a reasonably cheap lunch in the same place whereas Bodrum itself is always a tad more expensive I find.

I think Italy will take 'em tbh.

Mrs mate who is double jabbed, although 2nd was only a week or so ago, has the rona as well. Think she isn't particularly ill but feels like she has a bad cold and no taste/smell.

I've done a couple of tests when going to visit someone indoors but that's it. Still not going back to the office so not bother other than that. I probably should.

Filly has to take the LF test if she is going on visits.

I don't, but rarely go anywhere. But I do use the log-in scanner app.

A colleague is off sick with it (not just isolating). From her age, I would expect her to have been double jabbed.

Covid infections are continuing to rise across the UK, Office for National Statistics (ONS) data suggests.

But officials say vaccines are stopping similar rises in hospital admissions, and they are urging everyone to come forward for both doses.

Awsome, so it doesn't wipe out so many people until the vast amount of people with it give it a better chance of random mutations till it can kill loads more again.
Looks like we're doing it right in the uk then and thats no mistake, not like those pesky Australians who are trying to control it at the borders.

Loads of new 'cases' in my schools as of late.

1 or 2 of them having to nearly close.

Gov needs to change laws of closures of bubbles etc in schools as it impacts not just on the bubble that is closing but on other classes as some staff socialise out of work together, believe it or not, yes us working class essential workers actually have lives too...;)

We had a case in a school lately where a boyfriend of a teacher had tested positive on an LFT (52% accurate?) after drinking with 5 other teachers on a sunday eve, so the school had to find teachers for 6 classes on a monday morning as all 6 teachers has to isolate and wait for PCR results!

The laws are silly and need to be addressed!
