New number plate - where?

Post by Mr Moofo »

I have just scratched and cracked my number plate moving bikes around in the garage.
Where is the best place to get them.
I would like road legal rather than show plate.

Are all the places much the same?

A legal numberplate has to have the name/postcode of the people who made it on the bottom, they also need proof of ownership (like seeing he V5).

It's far easier to just buy a normal sized show plate that conforms to all the normal standards.

Halfrauds will do Legal ones I think, but I bet they take the piss on price.

All the ones I've bought have been 'show' in that they don't have the postcode like KFB says, but otherwise they look exactly like a pukka plate. I just bought them online at some random website which didn't need to see the V5.

Impact show plates every time for me, whether legal or slightly less so. Reasonable price and quick turnaround

Halfords don’t seem to offer the “motorbike” option ….

Probably in theory, but I've been through loads of MOTs with them.

My MOT tester stuck his own sticker over the dealer bit on the bottom of one of my plates (he asked first), so I don't think he was bothered about seeing their postcode!

Never been an issue for me

<edit>

According to this article the postcode and maker are not MoT items

Just go to one of the online motorcycle no plate peeps & get a legal one made up.
Motorcycles have different number / letter sizing & spacing than car plates*, so you are better off going to peeps who do them day in day out.

* probably why halfords don't do bike plates

Not in the size options as lots of 4x4s have square number plates? Pop in and see them as they probably will do them in store?

Re: legality of full size plates.
SWMBO got a tug last year for.'vehicle not.showing as taxed'.
Copper comes back over and says apparently it is taxed, but your plates are illegal so here's a 14 day fix notice.
The plates had been on the car for 9 years and obviously good enough for the ANPR not to do its job properly.
The difference between what's legal and what's roadworthy!
