MCN APRILIA TUONO 660 (2021 - on) Review

The Aprilia Tuono 660 may seem steep at just under £10k when compared to something like the Yamaha MT-07 (£6899), but its attitude and performance make it more of a real rival to KTM’s 890 Duke. And with the Austrian naked costing £9649, the Tuono 660 suddenly makes a little more sense.
It’s not much cheaper than its sporty RS660 brother (just £449), but it does put the emphasis on acceleration and has a slightly comfier riding position. But most of all, it is easy to enjoy and more than capable in almost any scenario. Looks great, too!

The Tuono is instantly intuitive and easy and one of those bikes that you can enjoy from the moment the road opens up. It’s light, responsive and easy to have a lot of fun on. This is a motorcycle that is accessible to everyone: from younger riders, who will enjoy a very light, intuitive and extremely easy-to-ride bike, to the geek who will appreciate the extremely simple yet fine chassis set-up together with the well-calibrated suspension system.

You can really chuck it into corners - there's a natural balance and attitude. This ease of use boosts confidence and the Aprilia Tuono 660 can be ridden hard and fast through winding country roads. This precision and performance reminds me of its sporty sibling, the RS660, which is hardly surprising as the pair share the same chassis. Pick a line and dive at the apex, winding on the throttle as soon as you dare.

But if you do need to change tack quickly, the high and wide bars make steering input almost instant and drama-free. The riding position is a little more spacious and upright than on the RS660 and all day in the saddle causes very few aches and pains.
The handling may be nimble, but it’s the engine that's the real icing on the cake. The Aprilia Tuono 660 drives cleanly from low revs, although there is a slight dip between 5000 and 6000rpm. And while the Tuono uses the same engine as its sporty sibling, it has been tamed slightly; down to 94bhp instead of the RS' 99bhp.

I watched LCR review on YouTube the other day and it's really grown on me....BUT MCN tested the 660 VS a Street Triple and the Triple won in everything inc price. You'd also get an MT09/XSR/Tracer for the same price or less which I expect will also out do the Prilla. And at 95bhp vs is it 115 for the 890 its not really directly comparable there is it?

LCR also mentioned the Tuono loses some of the goodies the RS has so 400 quid difference doesn't sound right.

So lovely bike I think and I'd love one, but I wouldn't pay 10k for it considering what I could get for the same money

Very taken with both the RS660 and the Tuono 660; I really like the styling, which is rare on modern bikes especially those coming out of Japan. I also like the general design philosophy, make it an approachable, 'real world' bike that is unthreatening enough for learner riders but fast enough and sufficiently well equipped for more expereienced riders who don't want or need 180 bhp missiles. The price is a bit steep, but it's Italian and (in my view) better looking than the competition. Griff at AP Workshops in Tamworth has promised me a go on their RS660, so as soon as the weather warms up I'll be taking him up on that offer...

Pretty, but busy visually. Looks very Italian. Fun to ride I bet and encouraging bad behaviour I bet too.

I always wonder about the fragile aspect with Aprilias,I doubt if I'd buy used.

I think if I was going to get a Tuono, it would be the maddest, baddest one. I like them. Griff is the man by all accounts and I wouldn't be too worried about the old Aprilia tales of woe. 1100 v4 servicing can be pricey though.

Big mate up the country has had Mille's for donkeys years now, no more bother than a jap bike and a lot better than the BMWs he's had.

It's only the chain and it doesn't look like it's seen much lube. I wouldn't be concerned, five mins with a brush and some lube will have it looking ok.

I don't get what the odd bit of metal mounted between the sprcket and the nuts is tho'

My MT has the same thing. Maybe somewhere handy to rest the chain during wheel removal...?

No mention of the Triumph Trident (£7200) in that write up. Its easy to see where the extra money goes:

I googled it.

It fills the gap between the sprocket and the swing arm, so if the chain breaks it doesn't wrap around and lock the rear wheel.

I have a friend chopped his CB650F for an RS660. He's had it two months now. Loves it, but has just had a letter saying it's due a safety recall. For a new engine!!!

That's fairly substantial as far as recalls go.

Less than 100 bikes, I wonder if that's just the US (it's an american webshite), or world wide.

Blimey that's a bit poop. V4 Ducati Multistrada's had some engine recalls for replacement too I read, including MCN's.
