Tubed Tyre Puncture.

Post by Yorick »

Not had a puncture for ages, but had a rear one today. Bloody nail.
Used the aerosol but it went down and valve ripped out of tube within a mile.

Should I have pulled the nail out?

I suppose mushrooms won't work on tubes.

Any other quick fix apart from aerosol?

Ta.

Carry a spare tube and learn how to fit it, sounds harsh, but it really is the answer.

It's a real pain getting them bloody rim locks on. And getting the wheel back in.
All without a paddock stand. And all necessary tools.

I can do it. Just not in the wild with no tools or paddock stand.

Woose, bloody pansy road bike boys, welcome to the rufty tufty dirty side.

Carry tools, you don't need many and lay the bike on its side or get a mate to hold it balanced on its side stand.

Alternatively fit mooses, its not like you do many road miles, you live on a rock in the ocean :)

It's a bloody pain to get the rear wheel in using a paddock stand. No chance without.

The other lads have a run flat system. Might try that

I've never had any luck with trying to stop a puncture in a tube so I'd pull the nail just to make changing the tube easier.

We always stop and swap the tube. I carry a long lever in the airbox, a couple of shorter ones in my toolbag (on the rear mudguard) the valve puller, bead buddy and a couple of small plastic bottles - one with talcum powder the other with tyre soap for when its wet.

We do it as a team, one to hold the bike, a couple to change the tube and the other two to take the piss.

Done a few by the side of the trail, fronts are easier than rears, but you seem to get rears more often, find a way to support the bike, you've got a two stroke so you can easily lay it on it's side.

I've got a KTM 24mm spanner that's also a tyre lever, it's really good, two of these and you'll get the tyre off, but there's a knack to it and the best thing to do is practice.

You have my sympathy. I fucking hate tubes. I remember repairing the tube on the rear wheel of my LC after coming back from watching practice at Quarter Bridge one year and seeing a nail in the tyre as I walked back. At least the LC had a centre stand, doing it solo on a bike with only a side stand would be nightmareish. And after all the hassle of fixing the puncture your hands are covered in shit and you're in a foul mood.

Tubeless tyres all day long...

TUbliss? Not sure if they come in the size you want, fitted one in front of the KTM EXC I had, you wouldn't know it was there, well apart from the 2 valves that is!

Just put new tyre on and the nail was about 3" long.

I wouldn't want it buried in my head.

And it just ripped the tube to bits instantly.
