Is The Internet Broken?
This lass whined that the telly box didn't pamper to her every whim. Too lazy too get off her arse and do something herself.
Most folk use the internet every day to some extent.
Hmm.

Re: Is The Internet Broken?
I'm in two minds really....
First reaction was "do they not do subtitles any more?". I genuinely don't know the answer to that question by the way, you always used to be able to do 888 on the Teletext but obviously that's long gone. I kinda assumed it's been replaced by something much better.
On the other hand, these briefings are about a new a quickly evolving situation that has big effects on every member of society. They introduce new laws saying you can't go out of your house for example. I don't think it's so much about the specific detail of having a signer on TV, but more about making sure the government holds up it's responsibility to communicate with ALL citizens and doesn't forget anyone.
But - she managed to find out the briefing was on, so clearly she manages to find info somehow

The Govt should make provision for everybody, I agree.
But they don't need to wipe your arse. You should be able to do that yourself.

I'm losing sympathy with this lot, BSL is one of many different sign languages so what do deaf people that don't undertand BSL do? Maybe fill the screen with lots of interpreters but then some will complain Boris is too small and they can't lip read.BBC wrote:A government spokesperson said: "We are committed to supporting disabled people through every stage of this pandemic and have established BSL interpretation at the No 10 press conferences via the BBC News Channel and iPlayer, available on all TV packages as part of Freeview.

Re: Is The Internet Broken?
I think Government should do the minimum necessary (defence, justice system, etc), and provide a safety net for stuff like health, unemployment, etc. Safety nets are not always safe, and never comfortable. They break your fall, but you need to climb back up yourself. Many people in the UK, especially younger ones, have a massive sense of entitlement. Living somewhere like Mexico or South Africa for a year might cure that.Potter wrote: ↑Thu Jun 17, 2021 9:06 am I suppose it depends on your perspective and to what extent you think your government should meet the needs in your life because it's their job to make life 'fair' and 'equal' for everyone. Some people think that and some don't I suppose.
My own personal viewpoint is that if some people think (for example) that they should be able to have as many children as they want even if they can't afford to provide for them, then this ladies view that the government must provide a communication method that suits her disability, isn't unreasonable.
Like I said, it depends to what extent you think the government should extend provision for you.

In the good old days of TRC we had an emoji for that.

Re: Is The Internet Broken?
Wee Jimmy Kranky's covid updates seem to be able to put signage up regularly
If not a deffy (yet, despite the handle) but I can imagine signed News is vital - the auto-translate (or however they do it) subtitles option is pretty iffy, and annoying.

I'm slightly surprised she hasn't introduced a Scottish sign language just to be different.
Sign language is pretty iffy generally, BSL has regional variations and children are taught Makaton before BSL so maybe they need one of them up there too.

Re: Is The Internet Broken?
I personally find sign language interpreters a PITA. I real life, with a big stage, they probably work fine, but on TV it is just an annoying distraction.
OK, it is a minor point, I get mildly annoyed, but a deaf person can 'hear' the news, so I should just suck it up. I can live with that, but the real question is 'where does it end? '. 3 different signing people? Should all visual programmes have a voice-over describing the scene for the deaf? What about immigrants who don't speak English? What about listed buildings that wheelchair users cannot access? Etc etc.
Just how much is a 'reasonable adjustment' for the disabled?
Serious question BTW, I think adjustment IS necessary, but my view is that it has probably gone about far enough, certainly as far as signing is concerned.

They just need to make allowance now for all the old white male cranky bollixes that are inconvenienced by the allowances made for the disabled.Cousin Jack wrote: ↑Thu Jun 17, 2021 3:39 pm I personally find sign language interpreters a PITA. Re: Is The Internet Broken?
In NI, any government stuff has two sign folk, one in BSL and one in Irish which I believe is closer to the American version. There was talk of having one for those who speak Ulster Scots, but I don't think such sign language exists for the hamely tongue!
Wasn't Makaton for special needs kids, I know that Mr Tumble bloke does it and all the kids on his show are special needs.
