Degreaser, what do you use?

Post by Taipan »

Normally use paraffin but the Mrs moans it stinks for days after. I did try the Gtechniq W5 Citrus All Purpose Cleaner but wasn't that impressed with it, but admit I could have got the ratio wrong? Anything else good out there?

I buy 5L of Screwfix "No Nonsense " heavy duty degreaser for less than a tenner and decant it into a spray bottle. Works well enough cleaning my collection of oily old Brit bikes and removes sticky chain lube well

I was using the W5 but it's still not as good as sdoc, if a lot cheaper. I also find it doesn't do much for chain lube. I tend to spray it on and go over the rear wheel with a pain brush then hose off but it's still not perfect so I wait until it's dry and use GT85 and a rag. I was diluting to about 1/4 with water.

I recently bought some of the latest muck off stuff as there was a special on 5 litres at SBS. That's ok but bit like W5 not perfect or as good as Sdoc. You apply that to a wet bike.

For chain cleaning I use paraffin if it's bad but just decant a little into a old bean pot and apply using a paint brush, that way you don't use much and it still cleans well. If it's not too bad I use GT85 and a rag.

For general wipe overs of engine/frame/swingarm etc if there's grease on them GT85 and a rag works great. Plus smells nice too.

I use a fair bit of paraffin on the old brit bikes, mostly 'cause that's what the Triumph manual says to use. It's got a few bits inside the engine and oil system you're supposed to clean on a regular basis, whatever you put in there theoretically might end up in the oil so I used paraffin.

Got a big bottle of generic brake cleaner which is good for little bits. It evaporates away well, which is nice. Also means you need good ventilation though! I might get some of that degreaser stuff Nidge mentioned.

I used to use the vapour degreaser at my old work somtimes, that was feckin' brilliant.

Hmmm, that's tempting as there is quite a lot of that hanging around here, just waiting to be borrowed...

You can still get MEK on ebay, believe it or not...

I use (in no particular order of merit) depending on the job in hand

Jizer
Paraffin
Acetone
Brake cleaner
GT 85
White spirit
Shiny sauce
Various wipes
There is no cloud, just somebody else's computer.

I use petrol for all cleaning. Even my hands when I'm done.

And don't forget the Bennetts bloke rated aldi (or was it Lidl) washing up liquid as pretty much the best cleaner/degreaser. No salt and cheaper than chips!

Motul Motowash is pretty good.

Worth pointing out that petrol contains a lot of nasty carcinogens.
