What about just going to a decent restaurant in the first place

I used to do that when I lived in the UK. Ok not proper restaurants but everything that is at the 'affordable' end is pretty risky. Pubs, 90% chance of disappointment. That's not to say they haven't improved.

Spain and France for example, not so much of a lottery and you can get great, simple tucker in restaurants and cafes for cheap.
