We had a four stroke one of them at Uni which also had transparent cylinders. ..it was mostly used to measure fuel injection patterns with a laser, so it was spun electrically and not actually running. It was perfectly capable of running properly though.

Not the same thing but sometimes engines cut in half give valuable information thats hard to visualise as well.

There's a reasonable vid about a drag racing H1 based thing, anyway at about 15:20 or so they show the dyno test "Mule" with a cylinder made from an aluminium block, looks proper weird cos there's no cooling fins but its not running for long enough to need em.
The presenter is kind of irritating but it's worth a watch all the same.
