Pizza oven build
Pizza oven build
I've wanted a pizza oven for a while but at £500 for just the oven I had a hard time justifying it. Then this appeared down the road from me for £200, you can see why.
But you can see in the bottom picture there is insulation poking out so this seems to be a well made oven. The inside looks good so its either been heated up too quickly from new or the weather has got to it. The inside is sound so it'll just need rendering.
Plan is to build a lattice frame from 4x4 oak beams, put 8 slabs on top of that (in two layers so it becomes a 1200mm x 1200mm) base and put the oven on top of that. Then render the lot. The oak beams are seconds but for this that doesnt matter. and having it open at the front means I can store timber underneath. Managed to rent a engine hoist locally to get the oven out of the van

Re: Pizza oven build
Getting it out of the van was interesting. There is no easy way to get it into the garden, the side alley isnt wide enough and the back of the garden is 400mm above the road. So first thing was to hoist it onto wheels
I then strapped it down in the back of the van and reversed up to the garden, I used two sheets of ply and built a bridge to the back of the country. I then wheeled it over that into the garden. I dont have any pictures of that cause I wanted to get it into the garden as quickly as possible.
And thats where it sits. As ever I used this project to buy more tools because why not. Ryobi 355mm cut off saw.

Re: Pizza oven build
Looks ok, I'd no idea they cost so much! Depreciation pretty tragic though.
Does yours have a door?

Re: Pizza oven build
Yeah, I wasn't really in the market for a pizza oven. I'd wanted one for ages but wasn't really fussed to be honest. It's only that this came up locally and the timing was spot on since I'd cleared stuff out and almost finished the smoke House that I went for it. And then the oak beams coming up so cheap, seemed ordained
Yeah, not cheap at all. And second hand ones dont come up very often since once bought they are built in as such. No, no door but as I understand it from this type (chimney at the front) any old bit of metal stood up at the front will work since the air flow flow draws up and out and not out off the front. I'm sure I'll overengineer something when the time is right!

Re: Pizza oven build
Yeah I made an oven from scratch, a door makes it more useful. Just need to find an offcut of really heavy gauge metal. My experimental wooden one obviously didn't really have the longevity ...
Re: Pizza oven build
Bit delayed on this due to work and other projects but I got the base for the oven built at the weekend. There is an upright to go at the back to support the chimney and roof. Thats the 100mmx100mm oak beams (which were crap on closer inspection which explains why they were so cheap) and 2 layers of 600mmx600mm slabs on top. Since I have to render the oven anyway I figured I would skim the slabs as well so that should tidy it up.
Big lift of the oven at the weekend.
Middle timber shows what I was dealing with. Flat top and bottom but warped in one axis. That will be the back piece, the curve will make that upright look good.

Re: Pizza oven build
Took some time off this week since I needed a break so decided to get on with the oven a bit more.
Preparing for the lift.
Onto the slab.
I then hoisted up the front so I could slip the plywood out. It being balanced on the edge also allowed me to nudge it into place. I'm glad I went for a large platform for it since that gives me room to place food thats going in or has come out.

Re: Pizza oven build
Last step for this part was to put the upright in place, this will support the chimney and the roof. This is the really bent piece, figured that wouldnt matter for this application.
Re: Pizza oven build
So next job with oven in place was to patch it and let it dry. I did this waith normal skim cost (1 part lime, 1 part cement and 4 parts sand). Not the greatest job but it cleaned up fine so I then had to leave it to this weekend to do anything else.
Re: Pizza oven build
Next job was to put a roof on it. I wanted that to float so I used catenary wire to support the roof top and bottom.
The cover the roof and add the chimney. I made a paper template for the chimney and cut it out to fit over the dome, that worked quite well.

Re: Pizza oven build
Its 13 inches wide, the high point is 7 inches which slopes to 5 at the side which means my cast iron panes and roasters will also fit in there.
Re: Pizza oven build
So yeah, been an interesting build, I've enjoyed it. Total cost not including tools bought for the job which will be used on other jobs is £673.19. Considering the pizza oven I was looking at (and thats just the oven, not the base or anything) was £550 I'm more than happy with this.
Only issue I have is how to fix the door to the front. The door I got is meant to be built in when you build an oven, you can see the tabs sticking out which would be placed between bricks or mortared into place. I dont have that luxury, and the front of the oven is concrete which is hard as so I cant screw it in place. I tried to stick it in place with fire cement but that didnt stick.
Any ideas? Thanks.
