I had an 18" wooden giraffe taken off me because it could be used as a weapon.

I properly kicked off and demanded to see whoever was the most senior person in the airport. A little fat man came along and I told him how silly this all was and he put up a reasonable argument but eventually gave in. When I got through to departures they sold the same ones in the shops there.

My mate had his telescopic fishing rod taken off him. He argued but they held it back, so he asked to see it again because he said his key was attached to it, it wasn't he just wanted it back so he could snap it and he told them that if he couldn't have it then they weren't either. They locked him up for that and he almost missed his flight.

I've had loads of these stupid things when I used to travel a lot.

There's a big perspex box at Atlanta Hartsfield Airport full of "The things you can't bring onto an aircraft"..... There's a chainsaw in there...

I'm not sure on your angle here? It almost looks like you're suggesting 'we' can carry a 3 inch blade with no handle??

I had a pocket knife with a 2.5 inch blade taken off me at the ferry port 6 weeks ago, not due to it's length, but because it locked open. When you are able to lock a knife open, you can use the back side of it as a flat blade screwdriver or a lever. there's also no risk of it folding and taking your fingers off.

The general rule here (for folding knives) is the blade has be shorter than the cop's palm is wide... altho proper knives like a Ka-Bar etc are perfectly legal if carried sheathed in plain sight. I know a lot of former Marines who carry their Ka-Bar's

I remember as a kid going out to play in the woods and we all had sheath knives on our belts, we were all in the scouts so it seemed very normal.
To be fair though it was a fairly rural area, I wouldn't have gone into town with one.

For a while a bunch of us kids had Fairbairn Sykes from the local army surplus store. Not sure what happened to mine
Did get arrested in St Helier with a 15in Bowie when I was 20 though. Gave the judge a valid reason for having it, he dismissed the charge & ordered the cops to give it back to me. Went to the station to collect it & they couldn't find it in the evidence locker. Turns out the cop who arrested me had it in his personal locker. He wasn't very happy about having to give it back.

I bought various long knives at military jumbles at Duxford when I was a kid (albeit a lanky kid). They weren't remotely bothered about me getting bayonets and machetes etc. I didn't go swinging them about on the cycle home, mind.

I have, however, subsequently committed many, many knife crimes as an adult.
