Re: Prince William gives the BBC and Bashir both barrels!
Interesting in the clip that I saw yesterday that it was Bashir's fault that Diana died in a car crash.
A crash where the car was driven by IIRC a pissed drugged driver, well over the speed limit. A crash that all occupants might have survived if they had all been wearing seatbelts (1 of 4 was, he survived). A crash in a location where a barrier would have redirected the car instead of it impacting a pillar and causing the car to spin.

She was the people's princess and that absolves her of any responsibility for her own death or anything else.

If he wants to look for reasons behind the marriage breakup and diana's state of mind he perhaps should look a little closer to home.

IMO the marriage was doomed from the start, Charles didn't want to marry Diana, and Diana was too young to know what she was getting into

I think he's got every right to say that the manipulation around the interview heightened her state of paranoia.
The Daily Mail holding the BBC to account is an interesting narrative.

I think they're referring to the fact that she wouldn't have been so worried about getting away from Paparazzi if her state of mind had been different.Horse wrote: ↑Fri May 21, 2021 11:01 am Interesting in the clip that I saw yesterday that it was Bashir's fault that Diana died in a car crash.

Re: Prince William gives the BBC and Bashir both barrels!
This whole issue gets my goat!
Bashir is a shit head - and the BBC covered up / allowed him to behave like that etc. Hence there needs to be ramifications in the BBC as it is publicly funded and meant to have standards.
Harry now says the BBC killed his mum. A few issues there - whilst Bashir may have used unclean tactics to get her there - it was Di who sang like a canary and lead to the Queen saying "divorce now".
It was Di who had a series on un-wise relationships with a variety of people ( when she could have probably had anyone - but seem intent on wrecking the marriages of others.
I have know doubt that she was scarred by the way Charles behaved - but fuck me, are there any divorced people who aren't?
She got into a relationship with Dodi Fayed - that she knew would piss of the place. The Fayeds are not know for being shrinking violets or playing by the rules.
She got into a car with a drunk driver, with no seat belt. The papps were there - but tipped off at every move my the Fayeds.
Unfortunately it was Diana's poor decision making that killed Diana.
Willian now needs to let the government sot out the BBCs charter. Rather than getting solved. The BBC certainly needs a kick up the arse - and to stop being "public school boys and girls from Islington and with curly left of centre remained views" run.
But the previous DG and Bashir should now be made to pay the price.

It's just one of those shitty situations that no-one comes out of looking good. That doesn't mean that people should get away with being shit heads 'cause everyone was one

Prince Charles and Princess Diana on their honeymoon, aboard the Britannia (Getty)
The couple were preparing for a white tie dinner with Egyptian president Sadat when the newly minted Princess of Wales spied a pair of cufflinks on Charles' wrists.
"Two 'C's entwined like the Chanel 'C's. Got it in one; knew exactly," she recalled in the secret tapes she sent to Morton that resulted in the book's publication.
Diana confronted Charles, asking whether the cufflinks were a gift from Camilla Parker Bowles, his former flame who was still very much a part of the future king's life.
She was young and healthy, and needed to produce future monarchs. After that, dispensable?

I can't help but think there's a whole lot more shit about the BBC waiting in the wings. They may not be as big as Saville and this thing but I think there's plenty of iceberg under this tip.
Of course, they'll simply say "Mistakes were made, we've learned from them and we're doing things differently now."
If their coverage of the news is anything to go by, they've learned nothing.

Charles was a wimp. He knew who he wanted to marry, but she was not 'virginal' enough. Instead of digging his heels in and insisting on marrying the woman he wanted he backed down, and was palmed off with a schoolgirl. It didn't end well.

Well, the upper classes work in strange ways. I am no Charles apologist - he comes over as a complete knob.Horse wrote: ↑Fri May 21, 2021 1:19 pm

But Diana controlled the narrative in the interview and said what she said. It wasn't aggressive interview, cajoling or entrapment. And she wanted to get even.
With the benefit of hindsight, it would of course have made sense not to have marry Prince Charles . And then nobody would have cared what she did ...

I doubt if Diana had much choice in it - the Spencer family saw an opportunity and were quite willing to use a daughter to get it.Cousin Jack wrote: ↑Fri May 21, 2021 2:31 pm Charles was a wimp. Re: Prince William gives the BBC and Bashir both barrels!
Hasn't that been alleged?
What were her alternatives, either to 'getting even' at all, or for doing so?
But, decades on, history is repeating.

Re: Prince William gives the BBC and Bashir both barrels!
Yes it was, ruthlessly manipulated by Bashir who used (probably) unlawful means to exploit Diana's vulnerability.

Whilst it seems Bashir's conduct was pretty shitty, this helps caricature my reaction when Piers Morgan piped up about standards in journalism

The gleeful outrage of now is certainly as bad as the gleeful gorging on Diana's tidbits was back then.
There's too many villains in the whole cockup but Bashir and the beeb are ultimately the ones that might pay. It's unlikely this is being pinned on the royal family or some vague section of the redtop reading public from yesteryear
