Tourists, that all Devonians and Corns hate despite having no other decent source of income.

It's a Celtic thing.

It's what they call the tourists. Coz they go investigate everywhere, like ants.

I know I'm an exception but lockdown hasn't really affected me. My wife still goes out to work everyday, and I still have to go shopping and do all the other stuff I do. The only thing that's been curtailed is trips to the big island and further.

I live in Cornwall, in a village where about 1/3 of the houses are holiday lets/second homes. Every new development is aimed at that market and the problem is getting worse.

Every sod and his sister has come to Cornwall because the Costa del Scum is off limits. Half of them cannot drive on a road that is less that 30 ft wide, the other half think they own the place and park in stupid places blocking roads, driveways, and everything else.

Meanwhile restaurants are open(ish) but cannot get the staff. Why? Because the poor buggers cannot afford to buy or rent in the area, which is over-run with tourists AND people who have decided to move down from wherever, The London habit of booking restaurants just in case you fancy eating there has spread too, so if you do want to eat out you often find you can't get a table for months.

Tourism is a plague that eventually destroys the place that created it. The way things are going Cornwall will become the new Benidorrm.

I shall join the Cornish Nationalists!

That is Devon, Cornwall is emmets.

An important difference, like cream and jam or jam and cream.

Heard in a locals pub on Dartmoor; "Cornwall is just a council estate with a beach around the edges".

My Dad who lives in Cornwall thought this was hilarious, my Cornish Wicked Stepmother not so much.😂

I think you're right but if the seperatists get their way it will probably get worse as they could no longer rely on the rest of the country chucking money their way.
You can blame your neighburs who are only interested in the highest price when they sell their houses, you can also blame the Cornish tourist board.

Things should have changed up here. We are now allowed to eat out on terraces - restaurants still aren't open. BUT, nothing is open up here till July. So, apart from with the unusually cold weather, nothing has changed up here

I did sit out at a picnic bench outside one of my favourite cafes yesterday - just because I could! But it was bastarding cold and just as I finished the sandwich and hot choc it' chucked it down with rain :( So I set off for the physio Apt early

It'll be interesting to go down to the valley tomorrow. I'm supposed to meet a friend in the morning for a coffee - hopefully it won't be raining so we can sit outside!!

I'm not so fussed about seeing lots of people as we've been able to go shopping n stuff for ages. And curfew hasn't much affected me because, well, nothing up here is open!

But I might see if anyone I know is planning to do an early evening trip to a garden/terrace and go join them!! Maybe!

I'm pretty much counting down to July when the resort opens again :D :D I'll have to deal with the grockles but at least I will have people to talk to again :D
Life is for living. Buy the shoes. Eat the cake. Ride the bikes. Just, ride the bikes!! :bblonde:

It is a Catch 22. Cornwall's main industry is fleecing tourists. We hate them, but can't live without them. The Cornish Nationalist bit was a joke, they have no policy except separation, and that wouldn't play out well.

The flip side is that when you're young & virile you get to spend the entire Summer banging fresh tourist totty damn near every time you leave the house. By christ, I laid a lot of pipe before I left & moved up country. 8-)

Laying pipe means having a shit where I’m from.

I love Cornwall. I’d move tomorrow. I don’t know if I’d ever be accepted, but it’s the only place in the UK outside of Yorkshire that I’d want to spend the rest of my days.

Lockdown: I’m going in to the office once a week and that is my choice. I don’t have to.

Don’t know what people are going through, but if this space helps to talk about it I’m more than happy ( no pun) to offer support when I can. We can be there for each other and knowing someone is at the end of a PM just might help.

I take home Communion to those who are not able to get to Church, so in a sense bring light and peace to them. For me it is the same as walking on sacred ground in being invited into their homes to share the meal. These profound moments make real the biblical verse "the light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it" in relation to Christ being light of the world.

For myself, I need to add more exercise to my regime, so that I can "feel" better physically, mentally and emotionally I am in a good place thanks to my faith.
Proverbs 17:9
One who forgives an affront fosters friendship, but one who dwells on disputes will alienate a friend.

Going back to the office has cheered me up as I've realised that I like coming home after a long day.

My brother is visiting from Cornwall next week and it will be the first time I've seen him in nearly a year. We're going to clear/cut back my Mum's front garden and paint her house (bungalow). My dad is also visiting with a van to help clear the rubbish. It's going to be hard work, but I'll enjoy it and it will be rewarding. I'd rather do some hard labour with visible results than pay a gym membership.

We will whine like a milk float, but we don't really hate incomers. We just hate the arrogant ones, and we hate the effects of demand jacking house prices up so that young people have to leave.
