I thought I read somewhere that they need to detect a small voltage in the battery before they will charge it.
Basic lead acid batt (Yuasa), Optimate 3 I think.
Any experience?
Can an Optimate charge a new battery?

Soon as you out acid in it starts internally charging so yes optimate will work.

Yes it will charge it, but I don't think you'll need to bother, you should get the battery, pour the acid in, leave it for whatever period the manufacturer says and the battery is ready to go.
