Picture size limits
I Mb. Really?
Yes, I know no-one wants the world clogged up with 20 - 30 Mb jpg files, but 1 Mb is a bit small. Even Windows reckons that 2Mb is the size to e-mail around.

I don't know what other sites are actually. Be interesting to find out, but as yer man says, why not host somewhere?Cousin Jack wrote: ↑Mon May 17, 2021 9:16 pm I Mb. Really?

There's no reason why we can't have bigger, but bigger = more money, more money, more backups, more more money.
We don't have a bottomless pit.
I'll look and see how much we're using first
Edit: ok 2mb.

Re: Picture size limits
I don't understand why people insist on putting up stupid sized image files, it's not as if resizing an image is in any way difficult.
A 2MB image would need to be shown at a resolution of 1920 x 1080 otherwise the image would need to be resized on the fly to be shown at a smaller resolution. Who views images posted on here at the full resolution of their monitor?
I don't think that I've ever posted an image at the resolution that the photo was taken at. If you are never going to view an image at its original resolution then there is simply no point in posting it up at the original resolution in the first place.
Maybe I'm odd, but I really don't understand why people cannot resize an image before posting.

Re: Picture size limits
Probably technical incompetence on my part. I take a picture and store the image. I then try to copy the image to this place, and it fails.Lutin wrote: ↑Mon May 17, 2021 10:17 pm I don't understand why people insist on putting up stupid sized image files, it's not as if resizing an image is in any way difficult.

The thing that provoked this thread was a photo (from my phone, not my 'proper' camera). I resized it from 12meg to 4 meg, an that didn't work. Then I resized it again to 2 meg and it was still too big. The next option down in size was 1/4 meg which was suggested as OK for thumbnails.
I should probably use some other tool for handling jpg files.

Re: Picture size limits
Display the picture on your phone, take a screenshot. That may be smaller than the limit. From mine it's less than 1mb.Cousin Jack wrote: ↑Mon May 17, 2021 11:10 pm

It would take moments to do.

Re: Picture size limits
Because it's the internet, it's vast and it's free, unlimited free storage of every minutia of everyone's life backed up automatically, except when it isn't.
Photobucket spoiled all of us, and the old gimmers are struggling to rally behind the new ways of doing shit.
Just get a photo host and run with it, you can even pay pennies a month for some if you wish, or not.

Re: Picture size limits
As per the rest of your post... in terms of forums, it's far from free. As you use more data in terms of transfer, the fees go up, as you host more images, yup, the fees go up..
Currently we're not using either all the bandwidth or all the storage we could, but there's a very slippery slope. Forums auto resize the images within the forum display, but a 10mb file is still a 10mb file, you as users just don't see it as that. Hence why we keep the limits down to something sensible.

Re: Picture size limits
I would also say that not everyone on here has the latest super-duper, ultra-fast broadband and consequently downloading large image files takes some time (yes, we're all impatient these days) and may well eat into a data limit.
And don't get me started on people simply hitting the "reply all" button when replying to an email. How much of the World's data traffic is unnecessary?

It's a bit of a faff on a desktop, if you're not that computer savvy, and it's more of a faff on a mobile phone, so I'm not surprised that people don't like doing it.

Or not cropping out irrelevant text from multi-embedded quotes, so a single post takes up half a page ...

Agreed - this is how the ISPs make (some of) their money.weeksy wrote: ↑Tue May 18, 2021 9:18 amAs per the rest of your post... in terms of forums, it's far from free. As you use more data in terms of transfer, the fees go up, as you host more images, yup, the fees go up..

One the BMW forums I frequent runs out of bandwidth mid month virtually all the time, and it's killing the forum stone dead because the (mostly older, less tech savvy) users don't 'get' this issue and so just see that they have connection problems and stop trying to visit, and can't see the benefit of donating funds to help pay for the costs.
(it doesn't help that the admin/owner has managed to lock himself out of the forum either!)

Re: Picture size limits
Well without sounding harsh (and deffo not as an Admin) you're not looking at rocket science here and if you frequent a forum it's as much your job to learn the foibles as much as it is for the forums to give you the facility to do so. But in simple terms, things are how they are, we all have to learn how to do things and once it's done, it's fairly easy.Rockburner wrote: ↑Tue May 18, 2021 10:06 amIt's a bit of a faff on a desktop, if you're not that computer savvy, and it's more of a faff on a mobile phone, so I'm not surprised that people don't like doing it.

Re: Picture size limits
I do agree with you in terms of following the mores and customs of the forum you choose to frequent, but you have to admit that some phones and softwares are not the easiest to use for less tech savvy people, especially when they keep changing the interfaces from something you've become accustomed to to something much more focused at more tech savvy people*.weeksy wrote: ↑Tue May 18, 2021 10:10 amWell without sounding harsh (and deffo not as an Admin) you're not looking at rocket science here and if you frequent a forum it's as much your job to learn the foibles as much as it is for the forums to give you the facility to do so. Re: Picture size limits
Maybe there's an opening for someone here to make an easy to use app to resize images on phones.
Don't ask me, I don't have a smart phone and don't intend to get one either.

Re: Picture size limits
On my (Samsung, Android) phone, view the image, click on the 'pencil' icon (edit), 3 dots (more), resize (from the preset % options), 'save'.
But, from previous discussions here on the same issue, there are variations.
But I bet the old school Luddites can't resize an image on an etchasketch

Re: Picture size limits
In my case it's partly ignorance but mostly forgetfulness. I upload photos to flickr and then link to them, I know I can resize them now, but generally forget to do so, I just use the default option.
Does a linked photo use the same bandwidth etc as an attached photo?

Re: Picture size limits
Same
I would think that it shouldn't tbh. The forum server will throw the html (the code the browser understands) to the browser (and record how much data that was), but then the html will have within it the address for the image at the flickr server, so the image itself comes from the flickr server and therefore shouldn't contribute to the bandwidth coming from the forum server.
Essentially - the image is coming from a different place than the forum, so shouldn't contribute to bandwidth, whereas an image hosted by the forum WILL (obviously).

Re: Picture size limits
I vaguely recall a dialogue box with a 'Host locally option', that might have been in vbulletin software rather than whatever this place uses.
