I'm against ID cards on principal, I'm not sure what that principal is or whether there's any point to it, I'm surprised I'm not left wing.

I suspect we're a similar age cheesy, and it was always the baddies in the films/books/war comics demanding "ihre papiere bitte".Le_Fromage_Grande wrote: ↑Fri May 14, 2021 12:48 pm I'm against ID cards on principal, I'm not sure what that principal is or whether there's any point to it, I'm surprised I'm not left wing.

The barstard would catch the plucky escapee out by talking to him in English as he boarded a bus - weird as he went on to be head of a criminal intelligence unit in the late 70s after being a butlerNidge wrote: ↑Fri May 14, 2021 12:51 pmI suspect we're a similar age cheesy, and it was always the baddies in the films/books/war comics demanding "ihre papiere bitte".Le_Fromage_Grande wrote: ↑Fri May 14, 2021 12:48 pm I'm against ID cards on principal, I'm not sure what that principal is or whether there's any point to it, I'm surprised I'm not left wing.

Re: Voting I.D. Cards
It's not about how they will be a problem now but more about how they could be abused by a future (probably socialist) government, but again voting ID is completely different as it's optional unless they make being registered a legal requirement.Nordboy wrote: ↑Fri May 14, 2021 11:32 amSaga Lout wrote: ↑Fri May 14, 2021 10:26 amWhen I'm walking down the street, the only person who needs to know who I am is me. I don't need an id card to tell me who I am, I know who I am.Nordboy wrote: ↑Fri May 14, 2021 8:45 am I’m obviously not that intelligent as I’m not quite sure what you’re asking me? I’m quite happy to identify myself to others, i’d be quite happy to carry an ID card, i already carry at least two forms of photo Id with me at all times. In fact, if I can instantly prove who i am by photo id, it can save a load of time messing around and avoid causing myself potential future issues etc.
When I'm walking down the street and you want to ask me who I am you need an id card to prove that you have the authority to ask me who I am. What's so difficult to understand about that?
I'm walking down the street, I don't need to prove that I havet he correct category on my licence to walk down the street.Nordboy wrote: ↑Fri May 14, 2021 8:45 am What I really don’t understand is when people get really upset about HAVING to carry ID? Or having an official ID card? Most people are accepting of the fact that to drive a car legally in the uk, you must have a valid DL, which more often than not these days is a photocard. If required to do so, you must be able to identify yourself and prove you are the person if stopped driving a vehicle. Also prove that you hold the correct categories on that licence. It’s a legal requirement that people accept to be able to pursue that activity.
I'm walking down the street. I don't need to carry an id card to show that I'm entitled to vote in order to walk down the street.
Exactly, I have nothing to hide so I have nothing to fear.
It’s not like an id card will be hung around your neck in 3 ft high letters announcing that you’re Saga lout?
And 99.999% of the time I really am not bothered about who anyone is. But they’d be very handy and potentially cut down on admin, time or bureaucracy if you did need to prove your id or wished to access certain facilities or services?
Like potter, i really don’t get the problem?
He isn't and that is why his objections are for completely different reasons.slowsider wrote: ↑Fri May 14, 2021 12:44 pm David Davis is not usually considered part of the loony left

In that case we should definitely have them, just so that we can have BJ looking on confused from the back benches.

And 100% of the time when I'm walking down the street I don't care that me carrying an id card would cut down your paperwork. If I need id to access certain facilities, I'll carry id for that purpose. Otherwise, I won't, why would I want to make your prying easier?

If you watch any of these moronic 'Police' fly-on-the-wall series - all the scrotes they catch in the act never have any I.D. on them anyway - they must choose to leave it at home. And the only thing PCPlod has in his arsenal is "Please tell me your name" and "Don't lie to me again". While all this is going on I imagine they hope Plod is going to get called away to something more important.Saga Lout wrote: ↑Fri May 14, 2021 1:58 pm And 100% of the time when I'm walking down the street I don't care that me carrying an id card would cut down your paperwork. So, yes from that point of view, ID only serves to inconvenience those who typically stay on the right side of the law.

Abused? Passports are only a requirement for (most) international travel. Driving licences are not required unless you are driving. But now they have become a de facto form of I.d. for any colour of govt as would a voter I.d.

Re: Voting I.D. Cards
You will not have to have an ID card to prove who you are to go about your business, you will only have to carry an ID card when you go to vote. When you are not voting you will therefore be able to leave the ID card tucked away in a safe place to be used the next time you vote.Saga Lout wrote: ↑Thu May 13, 2021 8:38 amYou come across as an intelligent person. Why is it that you don't see any difference between me having to prove who I am to go about my business and you having to prove that you have the authority to question me about going about my business?Nordboy wrote: ↑Thu May 13, 2021 6:36 am When the ID card thing popped up a few years ago, i policed a demo against the use of cards, with all the protesters chanting about liberties and ‘the man’ ‘big brother’ etc etc.
Strange thing was, when being spoken to, some of them really couldn’t get the irony when they demanded that I prove I was a real police officer by showing them my warrant card. Interesting (very much piss taking) conversations ensued!!

Re: Voting I.D. Cards
To have any value ID cards need to be biometric and issued under strict criteria..I very much doubt government will go to all this trouble just for voting, and it will become the norm for any number of perceived official uses ( starting with proof that you are covid free / vaccinated ) .. thin end of a wedge..irie wrote: ↑Fri May 14, 2021 4:40 pmYou will not have to have an ID card to prove who you are to go about your business, you will only have to carry an ID card when you go to vote. So I won't need to carry it to make Nordboy's life easier. That's what I've been saying.irie wrote: ↑Fri May 14, 2021 4:40 pmYou will not have to have an ID card to prove who you are to go about your business, you will only have to carry an ID card when you go to vote. Re: Voting I.D. Cards
That’s a shame, as all I do is walk down the street and randomly ask people going about their business who they are and to prove it? Rather than only doing that under very rare circumstances. The tin foil hat brigade would have you believe otherwise mind you.Saga Lout wrote: ↑Fri May 14, 2021 5:34 pmSo I won't need to carry it to make Nordboy's life easier. By the way, under those rare circumstances, I could legally ask who you were, and if you refused to tell me I could then arrest you anyway, so actually, any ID card could very quickly make YOUR life easier, rather than mine. Just saying.
Anyway, this thread started about voting ID cards, but then got onto actual mandatory ID cards so it’s gone a bit off topic.

And you would have to tell me that I don't have to say anything... etc so I still wouldn't tell you. Just not saying.
Because you couldn't see the difference between me (private citizen) having to prove to you who I am and you (presumably an official of some sort) having to prove that you have the authority to tall me to prove who I am.

As a teenager of the 70s, and probably one of the last generation whose wishes to do whatever the fuck they wanted were curtailed by an instilled sense of social responsibility, I say bring on compulsory ID cards.
If you don't like it, fuck off somewhere that doesn't have them. You can cross Spain, Cyprus, Germany, Poland and Belgium off your list though.

Re: Voting I.D. Cards
Just to be clear about this. You'd rather be hauled off to the local nick under arrest and have your freedom to go to the shops/pub/whatever disrupted for a few hours than produce an ID card on a point of principle?
That's a bit fucking stupid when you think about it.
