FTR1200

Post by Couchy »

Anyone ridden one ? Had the KTM a year now and I only ever get out for an hour or so once or twice a month so don’t need a bike capable of so much more. I don’t ride quick but do like a lively bike that likes to wheelie. I think the FTR looks ace especially with high level pipes.
So has anyone ridden one ?, I’ve got a demo this week so will find out but others views are always interesting before I dismiss them 😁

I'm not sure what emotion I should feel or express by not even knowing what an FTR1200 is....

I think the FTR is pretty cool, but you'll fuck the clutch big stylee trying to pop monos.

More power and torque than my KTM and the same weight, it won’t need the clutch....

but you need to factor in the overall wheelbase and the length of the swingarm.

True it’s shorter than the 1090 and carries fuel low not high. I’ll report back after a ride but looks like a wheelie bike to me...

Don't forget a lot of modern ECU's limit the power in 1st and sometimes 2nd.

I reckon it's a 2nd gear clutch up job.

I’ll let you know but every review has it as a wheelie bike, it’s also took a wheelie world record as a stock bike. Of course there’s more to bikes than wheelies.....yeah right

You know the joke, "How do you describe a Yorkshireman?". "Well, he's like a Scotsman but without the good humour and generosity....".

I'd say, looking at the FTR, I'd say "How do you describe an FTR?". "Well, it's like a Ducati Monster but without the reliability and excellent dealer back up...."

There’s 3 dealers local so more than Ducati. Reading owners forums the new Indians seem to have very few issues and nowhere near as many as Ducati. But a ride is needed which may take the idea away completely or may confirm it. !!!

I like the FTR, the look, the quality and the general concept. What would stop me buying one is the stupid wheel rim sizes which severely limit tyre choice. The OE tyres reportedly have next to no grip at all, even on a dry road, yet it's a punchy engine (characteristics and figures are comparable to a 990 Superduke) and a highly capable chassis. It should be a riot and it's crying out for sticky sports rubber but they won't fit and you're stuck with hard, wooden and skatey semi-knobblie flat-tracker lookie-likie rubbish that'll put you in a ditch and kill you if you even try use a fraction of the bike's capabilities. It would drive me mad.

This bike has the same size tyres on so tyre choice is not an issue tbh.

Same weight as my 1090 adventure, lighter than a lot of adventure bikes and the VFR800. Less than 5% heavier than a sports bike too. Weight is low down as tank is under seat. Unless you are buying a single all modern bikes are 200kg plus

I've really liked these since they were announced. Krazy Horse in Bury have several and they look really really nice. If I just wanted a toy and had the money then why not. They look well put together too. I doubt it'll be as capable as the 1090 all round, but should be bags of fun. Tests I read mentioned lots of wheel spin as the huge torque overwhelmed the tyres.

What KTM is that that has an 18" rear wheel? Neither of mine do.
