I guess I mean those who were young during ww2 or born shortly after, those who rightly or wrongly attributed a freedom value to anything they didn't want to do or were scared to do.

And now it's you dead catting to try to divert attention from your spurious argument against having voting ID.chutzpah wrote: ↑Wed May 12, 2021 10:28 am I'm finding it amazing that lots of people in this country seems angry at non-proven voting fraud, but not lobbying activities and procurement scandals which likely has a much bigger impact on the direction of this country.
It strikes me as such a dead cat strategy by the government.

Not everyone has photo ID.
Even if you try to remove cost as a barrier by offering free photo ID (eg by attending a council office with some forms of proofs of identification in advance) then the lower paid members of society who are more likely to not already have another form of ID are less likely to take time off work (unpaid) to do this.
If you want a bus pass you need a photo id
If you want a driving license you need a photo id
If you work for virtually any large company you need a photo id
If you want a passport you need a photo id
If you volunteer for almost any charity you need a photo id
FFS, it really isn't difficult, and arguably most of these are far less important than voting.

I was obviously a criminal for the first few years of my life. As a 5 year old I went off to school and didn't carry my ID card.slowsider wrote: ↑Wed May 12, 2021 9:46 pmCousin Jack wrote: ↑Wed May 12, 2021 8:54 pmHow old do you have to be to count as elderly?

Re: Voting I.D. Cards
When the ID card thing popped up a few years ago, i policed a demo against the use of cards, with all the protesters chanting about liberties and ‘the man’ ‘big brother’ etc etc.
Strange thing was, when being spoken to, some of them really couldn’t get the irony when they demanded that I prove I was a real police officer by showing them my warrant card. Interesting (very much piss taking) conversations ensued!!

You come across as an intelligent person. Why is it that you don't see any difference between me having to prove who I am to go about my business and you having to prove that you have the authority to question me about going about my business?Nordboy wrote: ↑Thu May 13, 2021 6:36 am When the ID card thing popped up a few years ago, i policed a demo against the use of cards, with all the protesters chanting about liberties and ‘the man’ ‘big brother’ etc etc.

I’m obviously not that intelligent as I’m not quite sure what you’re asking me? I’m quite happy to identify myself to others, i’d be quite happy to carry an ID card, i already carry at least two forms of photo Id with me at all times. In fact, if I can instantly prove who i am by photo id, it can save a load of time messing around and avoid causing myself potential future issues etc.Saga Lout wrote: ↑Thu May 13, 2021 8:38 amYou come across as an intelligent person. What I really don’t understand is when people get really upset about HAVING to carry ID? Or having an official ID card? Most people are accepting of the fact that to drive a car legally in the uk, you must have a valid DL, which more often than not these days is a photocard. If required to do so, you must be able to identify yourself and prove you are the person if stopped driving a vehicle. Also prove that you hold the correct categories on that licence. It’s a legal requirement that people accept to be able to pursue that activity. Yet, when asked to carry ID to prove voter ID/ general ID/ covid passports etc, really get their knickers in a twist?
But then, I have nothing to hide or wish to hide, I’m very unimportant in the bigger scheme of things and really can’t see the issue?

Re: Voting I.D. Cards
All the things that require ID cards at the moment are voluntary and you accept big brother to do those things, a compulsory ID card would be very different. Except nobody is suggesting a compulsory ID card, the left leaning complainers are deliberately confusing the issue to get more people riled up. Similar to the tactics used by the trans community by unlinking and then relinking gender and sex.Nordboy wrote: ↑Fri May 14, 2021 8:45 amI’m obviously not that intelligent as I’m not quite sure what you’re asking me? The actual issue is whether voting can be considered optional and if it's OK for someone refusing big brother to be denied a vote, but they dont say that as it sounds more reasonable than compulsory ID cards.

When I'm walking down the street, the only person who needs to know who I am is me. I don't need an id card to tell me who I am, I know who I am.Nordboy wrote: ↑Fri May 14, 2021 8:45 am I’m obviously not that intelligent as I’m not quite sure what you’re asking me? I'm walking down the street. I don't need to carry an id card to show that I'm entitled to vote in order to walk down the street.
Exactly, I have nothing to hide so I have nothing to fear.

It's compulsory here to carry your driving licence when driving.
And lots of places ask to see my NIE card, so always carry that.
NIE is my residency card and the number is used for everything official.

It’s not like an id card will be hung around your neck in 3 ft high letters announcing that you’re Saga lout?
And 99.999% of the time I really am not bothered about who anyone is. But they’d be very handy and potentially cut down on admin, time or bureaucracy if you did need to prove your id or wished to access certain facilities or services?
Like potter, i really don’t get the problem?

We're supposed to carry ID over here (even more so during covids). But my missus forgets 99% of the time. It's not a problem because nobody ever asks to see it, unless it's in the context where you might expect it - at the bank etc. It's not like we have spot-checks on every street corner.

^^^^ That.
There's no real argument is there just a bit of bleating about "infringing my civil liberties" which is a bit like your child saying "it's not fair!"
Most laws are infringements of your civil liberties so those whingers need to grow up. There are plenty of worse things than carrying an ID card that could be imposed on you.

It's amazing the way people get arsy about the concept. And then are happy to have Tesco Clubcard, and Amazon and Netflix account ( you do realise the sell the data, right), you already have driving licence , and christ knows what is on you smart phone ...
In the vast majority of Europe you have to carry you identity card. In German, I was never issued with a residence card - but always had my passport / driving licence with me. In CH you have to have you ausslander ausweiss pass with you ...
