Anyone that believes the gubbermint already don't have a pretty good idea of where you are, where you're going and what you're doing is deluded.
I suspect that amazon have a better idea.
A few years ago I got a communication from HMRC asking me to tell them where my son was as they thought he'd been evading tax. I wrote back saying I had no idea where he was but if they do locate him will they tell him I'd like my 3/8 drive SnapOn socket wrench back. I never heard another word from them and I suspect their ability to find people hasn't improved.

seperate issue - we saying poor, or even some minorities are too stupid to get hold of id? thats rather insulting to those people isnt it?
Agreed.
To be clear, I never said they were too stupid. Others said (implied) that.
I suggested that evidence elsewhere shows barriers that prevent them getting it.

Not everyone has photo ID.
Even if you try to remove cost as a barrier by offering free photo ID (eg by attending a council office with some forms of proofs of identification in advance) then the lower paid members of society who are more likely to not already have another form of ID are less likely to take time off work (unpaid) to do this.
If you want to buy a rail season ticket you need a photo id
If you want a bus pass you need a photo id
If you want a driving license you need a photo id
If you work for virtually any large company you need a photo id
If you want a passport you need a photo id
If you volunteer for almost any charity you need a photo id
FFS, it really isn't difficult, and arguably most of these are far less important than voting.
I have a Fronch 'carte de sejour' now, that's effectively an ID card.
Nobody's interested. In order for this sort of thing to make a real difference (to be annoying, an infringement on your civil liberties innit!) you need enough plod on the ground to make it happen. There aren't any. If it makes scrotes lives more difficult (and I hope it does but I very much doubt it because they're already driving about uninsured, whilst banned and with no licence ffs) then I'm all for it. But otherwise, it's a zero impact issue for me.
I'm finding it amazing that lots of people in this country seems angry at non-proven voting fraud, but not lobbying activities and procurement scandals which likely has a much bigger impact on the direction of this country.
It strikes me as such a dead cat strategy by the government.
I went to pick up an order from Screwfix the other day and was asked for photo id, which I willingly produced. I'd venture that voting in any election is a tad more important, so WTF should I object?

They're not.
They're just fed up with moaners who think the world is against them and their Corbyn style anti-everything shite of yesteryear, which is why this is a clever move, it looks like a swipe at the lefty moaners and everyone that isn't a lefty moaner will side with him.
Boris can do almost anything as long as he continues to appeal to the majority who are utterly sick of the hard left. Meanwhile Starmer is standing on the grass verge looking at his shoes and Momentum are behind the hedge stabbing themselves in the face with a fork.
I'm not convinced that the "anti ID brigade" are just lefty moaners. I mean lefty moaners will moan about anything that BJ says (because, well, he's a massive fibbing pillock) but let's not forget that until he did a complete about-face on this subject the "anti ID brigade" were largely identifiable in that part of the Venn diagram that covers the elderly and tinfoilhatters, rather than a certain political spectrum.

i dont get why this issue seems to be left v right? surely the going in position is we should have completely fair elections with no hint of corruption from anywhere or anyone.
i find it remarkable that you dont have to prove who you are to vote, which surely is one of the most important things we can do in a free democratic society. you need id for more or less everything else, and soon probably have to prove with some kind of vaccine passport to be let in a pub. they need to do something about postal votes also as that definitely gets abuse.

From my memory voting fraud tends to be by Labour councillors, so if anything is done to stop fraud Labour will lose out therefore it is bad for poor people as Labour is the only party they could ever want.

You didn't use "woke" and "snowflake", and I was so close to a house on my bingo card.

As I've wasted a lot of time of FB in the last few months, I've seen far too many Brits getting really upset that they have to give their fingerprints to get the Carte de Sejour. They feel it's an infringement of their civil liberties somehow
Weird that they still don't back down when they find out that all French (ok probably a handful without!) have an ID card and get fingerprinted at the time of application

It amused me to be fingerprinted. Some people seem to be dead set on 'The Man' getting them. I doubt he knows who you are.

It makes me laugh that people get so het up about it!! LOL

The G7 is coming to the Duchy in June, and 'exclusion zones' have been announced. Residents and those with legitimate business inside the zones will have to supply TWO forms of ID.
Actually I see the point, many photo ids (eg passports) don't have your address. So you need a recent bank statement/council tax/whatever as well
An official ID card would be helpful in avoiding trying to guess what sort of stuff I can print off the internet will actually do the job.

Hardly the elderly: they'll mostly have had one during the war.
My gran is 81, she'll tell you stories of American soldiers throwing chewing gum from the trucks to children as they drove through the town, but she categorically never had an ID card....
