Voting I.D. Cards

Post by Phoenix »

There are some days when Marina Hyde can be a bit a tad iffy and there are other days when she gets it spot on. Today is a fine example of the latter as she berates Johnson for his I.D. Card for elections.

Here's the opening paragraph:

"If I am ever asked,” Boris Johnson once wrote of ID cards, “on the streets of London, or in any other venue, public or private, to produce my ID card as evidence that I am who I say I am, when I have done nothing wrong and am simply ambling along and breathing God’s fresh air like any other freeborn Englishman, then I will take that card out of my wallet and physically eat it in the presence of whatever emanation of the state has demanded I produce it.”

And here's the rest:

It's not the politics that stinks it's the outright hypocrisy.

Absolute bollocks. I have highlighted the critical bit, anyone is free to amble along enjoying God's fresh air, but some things require an ID pass.

Like voting.
And, I suspect, entry into the Guardian building

No one can prove we have a pervasive electoral fraud issue.

Which can only lead me to the conclusion that there are other reasons behind this plan.

I wonder why, Maybe it's because without voter id it's difficult to prove.

there are many times when I'm doing important things (and some not very important things) that I have to prove my identity. Do you think voting is not important?

No he's not, no one is, about anything, I have to still think OMD are the greatest band ever because that's what I though in 1982.

The Electoral Commission themselves, whose job is to oversee fair elections, consistently state there is no evidence for large scale electoral fraud

https://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/ ... fraud-data

On the flip side, we already have data from other countries that have implemented voter ID rules that shows it disproportionately affects certain members of society.

Let's instead focus on more pressing matters. Those who feel disenfranchised already. Those millions not even on the electoral roll. Dodgy lobbying. How political parties are funded.

How?

If you are too thick/stupid to remember your ID perhaps you shouldn't be trusted to vote.

I'm not sure he did change his opinion, looks to me like he's making different comments on different topics.

Not everyone has photo ID.

Even if you try to remove cost as a barrier by offering free photo ID (eg by attending a council office with some forms of proofs of identification in advance) then the lower paid members of society who are more likely to not already have another form of ID are less likely to take time off work (unpaid) to do this.

Maybe voter id will enable the Electoral Commission to gather that evidence.

i dont get why this issue seems to be left v right? surely the going in position is we should have completely fair elections with no hint of corruption from anywhere or anyone.

i find it remarkable that you dont have to prove who you are to vote, which surely is one of the most important things we can do in a free democratic society. you need id for more or less everything else, and soon probably have to prove with some kind of vaccine passport to be let in a pub. they need to do something about postal votes also as that definitely gets abuse.

seperate issue - we saying poor, or even some minorities are too stupid to get hold of id? thats rather insulting to those people isnt it?

Having the ability to watch someones device location and actively watching someone and knowing where they are are very different things though ? I know with software where my lad is due to phone location tracking, but only if i look. They don't have 40,000,000 people sitting there watching 40,000,000 people.

Don't be a daft lad :D

They don't have 40,000,000 people to check 40,000,000 ID cards either, and if you think plod are going to come knocking on your door demanding to see your ID card you're probably paranoid.
