It was more to do with the engineered wood floor that had been down for 15 piss-soaked years and the whiff coming from the drain after I'd removed the loo that has troubled me, at least have an incentive to get the job completed double-quick now so I don't have to carry on smelling the drain

I believe it is normal to stuff a rag in the hole to help with the smell, that is one job I was happy to pay a plumber for.

Met the plumber at my Step Mothers and waited while he diagnosed and fixed the fault with her central heating. I tried having a conversation with my Step Mother who has dementia. Found it was more rewarding to watch Homes Under the Hammer. She didn't mind, well, notice.

It's death by instalments. I watched my Stepmum fade by degrees over a 7 year period. A fall and a broken hip hurried along the inevitable,by which time she was forgetting how to eat or drink. Death was a relief and a release.

My stubborn old Da was 92 and still looking after my Stepmum,refusing all offers of help,until he too fell and broke his hip. At that point the whole house of cards fell down. It's hell on wheels for families,you are quite right.

It might be worth getting an old fashioned stove top whistling kettle.

Similar to dementia, my wife has Huntingdon's disease in her family. I've seen several people die from it, probably the hardest was her brother. A super keen walker, runner, cyclist, canoeist, anything outdoors and he was up for it. Medically retired from the Police after 24 years service, his mind went downhill rapidly until he was sectioned and spent his remaining years being cared for in a mental institution. Not having a fucking clue what was happening he was operated on to be fed by a peg. He survived like this for a few years until he got too ill and was put on an "end of life pathway". It's a morphine drip and all food and drink withdrawn until you die. He died 3 years ago aged 55.

There's a test for it now which wasn't available when he was younger. His 26 year old son tested positive a couple of years ago.

Do you not get bored living on what is essentially a tiny island for tourists? I'd go stir crazy after a week. I believe there's a ferry to Morocco which lets face it, looks a more attractive place to live. The nearest bit of mainland is Western Sahara which is a bit of war zone so probably best avoided.

LEts be honest, how often in a given month do you go socially outside of something the size of the island he's on ? I know for us, it's not very often. Lets say 90mins driving, how often do you go further than 90 mins ? We're mostly home-birds i think in this country and don't stray often from our nest. The only real times we do is for MTB stuff, this weekend i'm going to the Peaks which is 3 hours away, but that's a trip that's been planned for months, not just a spur of the moment thing.

I'm very much 50-50 on his lifestyle in the context of me wanting to take it up... Part of me would love to be on holiday every day from now to eternity.. but part of me could see me getting bored too... How bored, i don't know... It's not like i got rock climbing every week or building dens in the forest... I think in many ways the benefits outweigh the downsides and the boredom factor would be outweighed by having all day sun, bars nearby and somewhere to ride if an when i wanted.

Dunno, but on the sand thing i can't work out where it's come from then. If it's a volcanic island then surely sand comes from the break up of the land/rocks on the outside edges... so would in theory be black sand instead of golden. The times we've visited his rock it was more rock than sand and whilst over by the lighthouse there's some light coloured sandy stuff, it's certainly in the minority from what we saw.

Ferry to Fuertaventura 30 minutes.
Then ferry to Gran Canaria 2 hours.
Then ferry to Tenerife 90 minutes.
