I’ve got a friend with an XR1300 but it had too many modded bits to get it registered. So he bought a French one then transferred as many mods as possible and is taking the il one back over next time he goes!! Much simpler!!

I'm in a similar bind. I've got an old 1988 VFR750 that has updated/uprated brakes/wheels/forks/shock and I can't see it passing an inspection. Bodywork is still original and at a quick glance it passes for standard, but look closer and it clearly isn't. Would going for a 'vehicule de collection' be an option here, or are they just as strict about modifications?

This was recommended to me on here https://www.frost.co.uk/por15-motorcycl ... epair-kit/ I I used it a couple of weeks ago. Its a three part process, 1st degreases and cleans the inside, 2nd de-rusts and finally there is a silver expoxy coating for the inside which seals the surface and any small holes and cracks.

I confess I don't know anyone that's done the vehicle de collection route or whether it even requires any sort of inspection or special paperwork. It all sounds a bit vague. I imagine it helps having an "owners club" on your side but I dunno whether there's huge interest in 80s hondas. It's probably one of these situations that depends on who's dealing with your case. I've reregd plenty of -cars- in France, none of the reg processes have ever gone down the same way (one I managed to get away without a CoC for example).

With my own early 90s honda I was just going to wing it and see how far I got.

Right, i've just paid some random person £40 for a hugger and i've sent £310 to Noggin in cash.

Not sure how far that'll get into what the Monster needs, but it's certainly a brilliant effort gang.

Battery
Rear indicators
2 X fuel filter
LHD head light (probably - maybe!!)


Ordered! (Cos he asked for these first!) -

Stuff that Crust recommended!
Fork seals
Front pads (1 pair)
Rear mudguard/number plate holder
R/h footrest assembly
Vacuum/fuel tap (and spare!)

Demannu (the spanner wielder) has found a German company that do a LHD headlamp lens, so I'll get on to them in the morning (better than trying to find a whole unit! - the French aren't kind to motorbikes, so I'd guess I'm unlikely to find one whole!)
Fuel filters should be fairly simple
Battery - did find a couple on ebay but need Demannu to confirm which is best (will find the links and send them tomorrow)
Then rear indicators!

Fully expecting things to need ordering as the rebuild goes along! have to see (so want a fingers crossed emoticon!!)

I used a company called www.batteryset.com twice recently - they were pretty good. Bought a few Varta brand, free shipping and all that.

With the headlight, as it's a standard round job a trick check the beam pattern. There are various designs but the simplest just have a kick-up on the nearside - so as you have a UK model it would look like \____ with the kick-up in the beam pattern on the left.

If it looks like that, the trick I used decades ago was simply to rotate the lens the other way inside the shell until the kick-up is now flat!

Of course, if you have a more complex pattern, it might not work.

It meant bending various locating tabs if I remember right, but whilst it wasn't perfect but it worked. It was still on the bike when my brother borrowed it and had it nicked several years later. You may be able to get away with doing that and save a bit of dosh till you can source a wrong-hand dip headlight.

IIRC the reason I needed to do this was because I'd bought a Cibie halogen conversion and it turned out to be a Euro pattern dip and as they were almost unobtainable in either form at the time.

Re the battery, I've gone for SHIDO Li-Fe batteries recently. So far, I'm impressed, and they're not too pricy. I've not ridden the Hornet since November of 2019 thanks to the pandemic and the battery is still fine, I've just given it one top-up on the charger since that last ride.

Malheureusement, Nog's will be dealing with DREAL, which is the French equivalent of VOSA. Except they make VOSA look like a back Street garage issuing Mickey mouse tests.

These are the kind of people who measure the height of indicators off the ground, anal, petty, civil service, bureaucratic jobsworths is not a strong enough description.
