Monster job!! : Forum build, repair, FUNDING REQUEST

Post by Noggin »

Ok. So on Saturday I finally got the Monster to a friend who had offered to see if it could be resurrected :)

(bloody hours away - being slightly dodgy as there wasn't a box on the attestation for "taking a bike to a mate", so absolutely not valid reason to be driving for 7.5 hours!!!) :?:

I dropped it off looking like this -

Image

Then as I was driving back home, I got a message on Sunday afternoon -
It all just fell off in my hands, honest.
You've got a spark on both cylinders now, but judging by the mess of/in the fuel pipes, that may be the root of your problems.
I'll take the carbs apart tomorrow and report back.

Today, more photos and -
One on the right I took apart without the need for tools!
Quite clean in there really, but someone has been in there before judging by the butchered screws.
Only issue is pilot jets adjuster screws are solid, that is tickover speeds, so hopefully not going to be an issue!

Here's hoping that this
It'll be amazing if it fires into life!
Otherwise you'll just have some well serviced scrap
is just pessimism!! I soooo want this bike to run :angelic-green:

(I never got in that far, so the butchered screws were not me!! )

Oh, it looks like the tyres (well, the rear) are 2004 :o :o :o

So, good chance the bike hasn't been used much since then as the tyres look virtually new :o :o

I'd get those bars re-angled - they look like they are pointing upwards at the ends. That's a wrist-knackering position. They should be angled towards you and down to fit with the wrist's natural angle.

looking forward to hearing it fire up :)

Thanx! I think he'll go through front to back to check everything but I'll ask about the bars when I go back down (will be a while I suspect!)

We did talk about a lot of things that need doing and the first thing is to find out if the engine works! Like he said, it could end up being very well serviced scrap! :(

Bit gutting that I can't be there to watch and learn but I'll survive, especially if it does run!! :D :D

They're simple and virtually bullet proof, I reckon it'll fire up and run without issues pretty quickly!

Well OMG!!! She runs!! Pretty much like a tray of spanners, but I'm led to believe "they all sound like that" !!!

The lovely friend said -
You wouldn't believe the actual 'fix'
Sorted the carbs, popped it all back together and she was popping back through the carbs evenly on both cylinders but not firing, as if the ignition timing is out, so the weirdo in me thinks, what happens if I swap the plug leads around!
  :banana-wrench: :banana-wrench:

And, less happily (but fully expected -
I'll get a list together and get back to you by the end of the week.
Up to you how long it takes to source the bits.
Guessing she needs a top end service judging by the rattle.
A couple of bits are going to be pricey or need to be sourced from a breaker ( vacuum tap fr'instance)

They have a wet clutch, so shouldn't sound as much like a bag of spanners as the larger capacity Ducati's.

TBF yours doesn't sound terrible.

I can't remember if you ever had the belts changed, but I wouldn't run it too long if they're ancient. They're a piece of piss to change tho'

I did the belts the summer I fell off the push bike!! LOL I did the belts, plugs and both filters. He did say he was going to check the positioning on the belts before he ran it, so I guess I passed that test!!

Not looking forward to the list, but pretty bloody happy that it runs!! :banana-wrench: :banana-wrench: :banana-wrench:

Aye, it sounds ok to me, a lot quieter than my Monster 1100.

Really good to read that it sounds ok!! I’ll have to get used to the noise cos tis a bit different to anything I’ve had before!!!
Potter wrote: Tue May 04, 2021 2:36 am Post the list when it comes, you've had a shit run of luck the last couple of years and maybe we can crowd fund to put that smile back on your face.
There is £100 from me to stick in the pot towards a Monster resurrection fund.

(I know you don't have paypal, but see if your friend does and if he doesn't mind using it for people to send money for parts)
That’s so kind. You’re awesome. Thank you. xxx

I’ll ask him later.

Sounds quite sweet.

Plug leads the wrong way round? LOL LOL

I don't suppose they have F and R on them.

Reminds me of an X-ray on my right arm - they were having trouble deciding if it was broken and I got sent back for a comparative X ray on the other arm. After the obligatory wait I was called in to see the doc who was waving an x ray transparency around and saying "I can't see anything at all". I asked "is it important that the one you're looking at has a big L on it when it's my right arm that's supposed to be broken?"

He flipped it over, did a double take and invited me to wait outside again. A few minutes later I was back this time with BOTH x rays to hand. And indeed there was a small crack in the right humerus...

They're supposed to sound like a bucket of spanners, that sounds ok to me.

Once they've done a few miles the clearances are pretty stable. Mine's only had a couple of adjustments in 40,000 miles.
