I know it should be taken off and a patch welded, if possible.

But does exhaust gum stuff actually work?

Doesn't need to look pretty, just be cheap.

I assumed the exhaust gum needs some kind of wrap around patch material to work properly?

Silicone is even cheaper, use clear stuff under the bean tin if you don't want it to look like a bodge. Pop rivets should hold it on nicely.

My FiL fixed an English Electric Lightning on the flight line with a Coke can and pop rivets. You'll be fine

Gave it a wire brush, looks like a nice big crack as well as a hole...



Because I couldn't get the bike off the ground, I was limited by the size of my drill to the angles I could drill at. Managed to get two rivets in at opposite corners.



Then covered the edges like the destructions that came with the gum said.



It's got to dry overnight, but it's already quite hard. It was super sticky too, it stuck the can that wanted to be round to the contours of the collector, I half thought about not using rivets at all.

When it's all hardened up I might give it a bit of a rub down. So far the total cost is £4.

I like's the bike, but it's 23 years old and cost me £1800. I'm not spending almost £400 on the only aftermarket system still available for it.

Much as I admire the bodgery wouldn't taking ot off and getting it welded (like you mention) be a bit more suitable?

I used the gum / paste on a ZZR600 collector many, many, many years ago and it never held for long. Long enough for me to sell the cunt though.

I don't mind the noise so much, but I suspect it's having a bit of an impact on the MPG. Unless these things are only supposed to do 130 miles to £22 of go-go juice.

Also, taking it off would mean disturbing the exhaust studs... that probably haven't been undone for 23 years.

Thin wire will hold it in place nicely. Got any old twin and earth electrical wire? Lockwire would do at a pinch, but that's a bit toity. Old wire stock fence is good too.

I don't want to be the turd in the punchbowl but it is pretty bodgy. What about when you come to sell it? Surely you could get some scrottager to weld it with the exhaust in place for a ha'peth of gruel.

After servicing and general fucking about it owes me £2k at most.

I've had at least £2k's worth of fun fucking about with it over lockdown.

As the phrase goes, "You can't weld rust". Exhausts, aside from stainless and Ti systems, are a to be considered a consumable item and need to be binned when they start falling apart. No fucker wants to weld them as they are dirty, thin, horrible, shitty things.
