Cost of swapping bikes

Post by Supermofo »

There's a feature in Ride Mag where they look at whether readers should upgrade their existing bike or swap to the newer version. This is from about a year ago as I'm catching up on the Bikes Unlimited App. Mostly the costs are really high but this one took the cake.

Bloke buys a 2016 GS Adventure Iconic at £19k. At 30 months and 33k miles he trades it for a 2018 Adventure Rally TE. The 2018 is on special at £15.2k as the new shift cam is now out, but cos he's used his 2016 he only gets £10.5k in trade in. The new 2019 Adventure Rally TE is £18.3k and again as he's used his 2018 (17.5k miles in 12 months) he's only offered 10.5k in part ex. So he'd need to find £7.5k difference.

Now in the article he decides not to change...yet, but says he will get a shift cam version new at some point.

So he lost £8.5k in 30 months on his first GS
About to lose £5k or more in 12 months
And is thinking of spending £18.3k on a new one that he'll no doubt lose £5-10k on in a very short space of time.

Are people mental?

Actually don't answer that :D

Yeah generally the gaps can be massive. I thought a few months ago about the 890R and my XSR900 was coming in at £6000-6100 in p/x which is the best part of £1000 less than i paid for it.... I wasn't happy dropping that. So pulled any thoughts.

Happily, i know it was the right decision, so no biggy.

But yeah i've seen plenty of people who'll drop 3,4,5000 on a bike/deal. Generally i'm happy if it's less than £1000 lost. But that's now because 99% of times i use dealers, whereas in the past i'd have used private and i would generally like to get out for £0 or even profit.

I could give my FZR400 track bike away and I'd only be down £1500, same goes for my FZ750 road bike, both are fun to ride, I suspect I could sell my YPVS for more than I've put into it, the Kawasaki probably not, as the engine ended up costing a lot for the 1170 big bore which was needed to solve the scored barrel.

Lots of people don't look at the overall cost, they're only interested in the monthly payments.

If you're paying £250 a month for the old bike and you can pay £260 a month for a new one it's easier to justify.

Not me. I like stuff to be bought and paid for.

All bikes depreciate, and I was also getting a 2 year warranty. The bike was mainly used on track, so I had peace of mind if I blew it up :)

I'd say that's pretty good business by you, given the use you got out of them

I was thinking of swapping my 2019 z1000sx just before Xmas for a Tuono Factory and was offered only £7k for the Zed, for which I'd paid £9500 7 months earlier.......still got the Zed :)

Must admit not looking forward to the change over of my 690 against a XSR/Z9 cost wise, but having finished paying for the 690 3 years ago helps.

You should get over to OYB on Sat and take the XSR out while i have a coffee, i'll point you in the right direction for a brilliant road, or i may even steal a bike off one of the lads for it while they have coffee.

Say you take out a £7/8k loan to buy a bike (maybe you've already got a couple of grand deposit).

It costs you £250 a month over 36 months.

If you budget for this £250 and are happy to pay that a month for the rest of your biking career, every three years you've got 7-8k to put towards your part-ex for a new bike.

It's not really much different to how PCP works when you think about it.

Yeah pretty much...the only difference with PCP is that you're committing to owning the bike for a fixed period and agreeing in advance what you're gonna sell it for. So you may win or you may lose vs. just flogging it privately later. With PCP though its all very certain, which is appealing in some ways.

Don't forget brand new bikes attract VAT whereas used ones don't (sort of....dealers pay VAT on the profit from a used bike, private obviously pays nothing). So straight away a brand new bike has a loaded price.

That's why several of my recent bikes have been ex-demo. This XSR i bought with 250 miles on it, but for £1700 less than the cheapest new one... So for me, well worthwhile.

Me too, there were at least 10 Aprilia RSV4s at Snetterton yesterday, they've got to be £15K+, I doubt if all the people on them paid for them outright, I couldn't ride a bike on finance on track, the thought of slinging it and then having to pay for it for however many months would prevent me doing this.

And while they were quicker than the people on cheap bikes, were they having any more fun, you can get a 2003 GSXR1000 for under £3K, it's limits are well beyond most people's riding ability.

NEver once entered my mind. Once upon a time i was i the right place to buy them outright, but with a few things and too many swaps at a loss, somehow i ended up in the PCP situation. But that's not stopped me riding it as hard as i can on track.

How would you have felt paying £250 a month for a pile of bent metal and plastic?
It's probably easier for me as I haven't bought a bike on finance since 1996

Don't they end up happening to crash about 50 yards from the entrance to the track and claimed on insurance
Or if you were me about 50 miles from the track via transit van.

Not always. One of the lads destroyed his bike and rebuilt it over the winter before last.
