Nowadays it just seems like a good way to add weight exactly where you don't want it.

I "get" spoked wheels on proper offroad bikes cos they have a bit of give and are very forgiving and maintainable.
But they are heavier, its a trade off and yeah I have heard of tubeless spoked wheels as well.

On a proper roadbike? I reckon that ship has sailed a long time ago.

indeedy.
Assembled Wheel Set Includes:

Cognito Moto Front and Rear Hub
Excel Takasago Series Rims in Black (17×3.5F and 17×5.5R)
Stainless Steel Spokes and Nipples
Pre-Installed Bearings, Spacers, and Seals

Recommended for Installation:
Rim Strips
Radial Tire Tubes
New OEM Rotor Bolts (Yamaha specs to replace when removed)
Weight: 11.4lbs Front | 17.6lbs Rear
Just a quick Google and no idea if this is correct.

2005 Suzuki GSX-R1000 bare wheels:
Front - 8.6lbs
Rear - 11.6lbs

So substantially heavier.

The rear seems particularly chunky compared to a conventional wheel.
