Tyres how olds too old
Tyres how olds too old
I have a pair of tyres in the garage unused metzeler racetecs 190/120 which are dated 2014, I have no use for them and want them gone.
I would personally use them if I had a use for them but fully understand plenty of people wouldn’t, so would you put any value to them or throw them in the bin ?

I'll have the front, pretty sure it'll be okay if it's brand new, rear is too wide for my bike.

I put stuff like that on Facebook market place for free.
I put some ancient part worns on and got a bloke who picked them up an hour later to put on a bike just to get it through the mot.

Re: Tyres how olds too old
The tyres on my old bike are from the 1970's, they don't even make them anymore.
They've gone a bit hard but they still work. I keep meaning to change them but never get around to it.
Some of the fellas I know are using tyres much older than that on vintage bikes, but they're made from something else that apparently doesn't degrade the same, I'm sure the fella said natural rubber, they felt very soft.
I bought a TDR250 with low miles and the OEM tyres on it (almost 30yrs old), the rear would let go under power but it was predictable.
In countries with very bright sunlight, they seem to be cracked and knackered <4yrs.

Imo...if they look OK, feel OK, they are OK. Rubber will crack and perish like on caravan tyres, mainly from sunlight, but they will degrade in the dark aswel over time. I'd use 2014s no problem.

Re: Tyres how olds too old
I bought my 2013 Sprint last year with the original tyres on it.
I wasn’t bothered about the age but changed them because they were the worst handling tyres I’ve ever known.
There’s probably loads of low mileage bikes in folks garages with the original tyres on.

Re: Tyres how olds too old
Funnily enough I just sawed up a Pirelli Power rear tyre (to get it in the wheelie bin) yesterday that I’d had round the back of the shed for at least 3 years.
I got it off a mate but sold the bike it was intended for before fitting it.
I’d assumed it was ancient and useless but it turned out to be dated August 16.
Oh well it’s in bits now
