I haven't had to choose a dog name since Storm in 2000, all my hounds since have been rescues so they've already been named.
The feline overlords are different, the eldest is called Hallion, which is an NI word for a hooligan or nutter. She was named because she was a feral who was rehome then badly treated and became so vicious the shelter were going to put her down, my mate worked there and said she knew someone who would take the psycho. So she's been here about 11 years now.
Dora was named because when she was a kitten she was very good at exploring. Now she's just gone idle.
Horatio was named because I remarked whilst watching CSI Miami, if he was ginger, he could have been named Horatio. Then I said "fuck it" and named him it anyway.
