University research into loud pipes “myth”
"Bad news for supporters of ‘loud pipes save lives’. They don’t do any such thing, and for the simplest reason of all: car drivers can’t hear even loud motorcycles."

What about pedestrians?
I almost got run over once by an electric car because it snuck up on me. The sneakily quite bastard.

But... the research suggests that loud pipes DON'T draw attention.

It was most evenings in the pub car park... I'd already bumped into other customers, tables, doors and flower pots on the way thereYorick wrote: ↑Tue Mar 23, 2021 2:25 pmIn the pub car park? The Spin Doctor wrote: ↑Tue Mar 23, 2021 2:23 pmI walked into a car once because the engine was off and I didn't hear it.KungFooBob wrote: ↑Tue Mar 23, 2021 12:19 pm What about pedestrians?

Many years ago, I was having a particular bad time. After months of ignoring everything piling up, I finally looked at all of my finances and appreciated the depth of the pit.Yorick wrote: ↑Tue Mar 23, 2021 2:25 pmIn the pub car park? The Spin Doctor wrote: ↑Tue Mar 23, 2021 2:23 pm

I checked every pocket and hiding place, gathered all of my money together.
£1
Fireworks were on at the local event, so I decided to walk to the pub, buy a half, and sit on a wall to watch the fireworks display. Someone drove into the wall.
Smile, things could be worse.

Re: University research into loud pipes “myth”
Can't agree with that, I'm recently put open cans on a Ducati ST3 after riding around on standard cans for a couple of years. It's very noticeable that cars have started driving in the verge when I'm behind them, making space for me to pass, even though I'm not "menacing" them, that's in 50 - 60mph traffic. Probably wouldn't work for cars pulling out from side roads though, unless they had their window open!

Re: University research into loud pipes “myth”
Who in god's name takes up riding or fits a race can to be safe anyway?
Like most I've had my share of loud pipes, but I've never had a brain fart to tell me,'lets pull the baffles out of this to make me safer'
Anyway,I prefer stealth/a wee bit of a snort from exhausts these day.

We need a bigger sample!
Maybe a poll, with four options...
1. I have a loud pipe and I'm alive.
2. I have a quiet pipe and I'm alive.
3. I have a loud pipe and I'm dead.
4. I have a quiet pipe and I'm dead.
