KTM 990 Superduke vs Supermoto

Post by bevvo »

So my mate wants to buy a KTM 990 Superduke but the supermoto is also popping up in search results on ebay and autotrader.

I don't know much about the differences aside from the SM having a big flappy front mudguard.

A quick google suggests the SM might have lower gearing and less weight but the SD is a better road bike.

I'm sure I've seen KTM 990 mentioned aound here before so does anyone have any insight?

I've owned 5 Superdukes, so i think i can offer a few thoughts on them. I've not owned a 990 Supermoto, but i've owned 4 950 Supermotos :)

First thing to note, there are 990 Supermotos and 990SMTs, they're different in terms of tank, size, stature and looks, but essentially very similar bikes.

the 990 Superduke is IMO one of the most brilliant bikes on the planet. They just downright great fun to ride...

Speak to Couchy, he's got a lovely one for sale currently.

I rode a 990SM once. It was brilliant fun, made you do very silly things. If I owned one, I'd be dead by now.

Yes....

That's not uncommon, i've lost count of how many he's sold without riding.

I owned a 990SM. I preferred it to the Superduke when I test rode them, no idea why, I just did. It was a second bike, I commuted it into London when the main bike was off the road, rode it to my parents in Ireland, and just used it as transport. Great fun to ride, nothing went wrong in the 18 months I owned it, I'd have another.

Looks like my mate has chosen to go for the superduke rather than the supermoto. ;)

I had a SD from new which I've only just parted with. I also had extended test rides on the 950 and 990 SM.

Both bikes were great, the main difference is that the SD is more sportsbike and the SM is more dicking about bike. Both will pull huge great wheelies, but the SM is softer on the landing.
