The home electrics system I'm looking forward to is one where the house supply is disconnected from the grid. The grid will only supply the battery which then supplies everything else, I will get genuine control over what I take from our put back into the grid.
For that to work it needs a good high capacity energy store and current batteries won't do that.

Looking past the headline any electric car costing over 35k gets no grant at all so the government seems only interested in promoting little city cars.
Electric cars are still exempt luxury car tax but that's about £1600 over five years, I don't know if there are are other incentives that I've missed apart from virtue signalling.

Why do a lot of people think electric cars will be or are cheaper to run ? It’s like fuel is the only expense running a car. I’m always looking at deals for work cars and it’s still cheaper to run a diesel than an electric and far more convenient. The gap has closed but the electric is still more per month doing 25-30k miles a year. That’s lease fuel and maintenance. That’s worked out on cheap electric not the stuff you can buy publicly.

It was only ever the fuel but that was pushed as cheap yeah.
I speak to people weekly who pay £600 a month on lease deals and brag about saving £100 a month on fuel. It’s like the lease cost isn’t seen lol

I think I answered that on my first reply to this thread and several times since

I'm pretty certain my next car will be electric, in fact I'd say I won't change cars for anything else (unforseen things notwithstanding). When I bought my current car 5 years ago I also tried an i3 but the range wasn't right. If I'd been looking a year later the new model would have been right and I would have got one.

In 2020 I seriously looked at a Model 3 and did "the maths", I was umming and ahhing but you know what happened in 2020.

In 2021 I genuinely don't know what my car situation will be. We've already gone from 2 cars to 1 and cut 20,000 miles a year out of our mileage. We're probably going to be WFH at least 75% of the time so who knows. Not thinking about changing cars full stop ATM.

Yeah I'm very pro leccy vehicles. I would say its because I work in EVs, but I also work in EVs cause I'm pro leccy IYSWIM. 6 months ago I started working for a motor/controller company but for 2-3 years before that probably 50% of my work (in carbon fibre as most of you know) was in electric vehicle stuff, including working with my current employer quite a lot. So anything which makes people buy electric cars is fine by me.

My job is also part of the reason I haven't bought an electric car yet...I can see what's coming! We work pretty closely with the OEM and I personally work in the New Technology division, so I can see the performance figures the OEMs are anticipating sorta 3-5 years out. There's gonna be shit loads of 3 series type cars on the market soon.

How about a charging lane on motorways for say, 50 mile stretches. When in the charging lane it fills your battery, then your good to go into faster lanes, keep it moving. Have these lanes spread up and down the country on our multi- lane major routes. There you go, all sorted.

TBF, combining the two for the long distance bit is a pretty good idea. Trains are way more efficient but pretty crap at parking in a supermarket loading bay.

Electric fuel costs are only cheap while they are a niche player. When the tax raised from petrol/diesel starts to drop significantly the Treasury will have a new wheeze to get the money back. Probably road pricing.
