Memorable birthday present... toolage.
I've got my 50th this year as some will have noticed.
I was going to get a Haga rep Arai from Mrs Weeksy as a present to remember the date, but that doesn't fit, so has been canned.
So i'm now looking for something 'special' i can keep for a long time, use, cherish.
I know some of you would do a watch in this instance or similar, but i don't do watches, or shoes, or anything like that.. I don't do wine, scotch or anything along those lines either.
So i was thinking "tools"
But what tools.... that's the question.
I'm leading to thinking 'the best T-bar handle set allen and torx set money can buy' Simple because, Allen/Torx are by far the most used items in the garage, so having a super set would be great.
But i'm very much open for ideas here..

Maybe not the most used, but one where quality really helps noticeably. The smoothness and ease of use that makes a high end ratchet pleasurable perhaps?

Something else that comes to mind is proper surgical gloves, not the ones in boxes of 100 but individually packed pairs. They are an absolute luxury, if you need that amount of dexterity it's unlikely you'll be dealing with such filthiness as to need gloves.
I get the out of date ones that can't be guaranteed to be sterile.

That was more of an aside, I was thinking about this as I did the washing up.
What sort of tools do you use?

Not essential i think, the number of times i use a torque wrench isn't that high
This is something VERY much in the thought though yes... It also has the potential for making moving the track bike about a lot easier in some ways too.Le_Fromage_Grande wrote: ↑Mon Mar 15, 2021 8:49 am An ABBA skylift, you could clean all the difficult to reach spots

The track bike is jammed in behind the day to day bike, so getting it out means moving the front one, along with faffing about getting the track bike lined up, in, out, forward, back, etc to get it into position. The Abba skylift may make that far easier...

Re: Memorable birthday present... toolage.
A really good quality tool box, Snap-on charge loads but they are the best I've seen.
Like luxury toilet paper, a quality tool box has to be used to be appreciated.
I would expect a decent dealer to have a 40 inch wide top box and roll cab with roller bearings second hand for under £1000. There's a fair chance it would be a Limited edition (essentially just some stickers in most cases).
I can have a word with our local guy if you like?

Yeah that's above my budget for her, she'd happily go £1000 but i'm not comfortable at anything more than half that.... But that doesn't mean i can't and won't put in the rest myself.Jody wrote: ↑Mon Mar 15, 2021 9:32 am A really good quality tool box, Snap-on charge loads but they are the best I've seen.

Sure it's not snap on... but, well, it's darn pretty.

I've just spoke with our local guy, he's going to keep me informed of used boxes coming his way.

Re: Memorable birthday present... toolage.
I would second the proper ratchet/set. 1/4 drive Snap-On or similar with a fine tooth ratchet and proper sockets are a pleasure to use. When I was spannering on aircraft I used to have a set along with 'wobbly' sockets in the common sizes (they have a universal joint built into them) and I cannot remember ever rounding off the head of a nut or bolt. On a couple of occasions a socket crack (there is much less meat around the part that goes around the bolt than cheap crap) - show the Snap-On guy, new socket in exchange. This was a few years back mind, wonder if the guarantees are as good now?

they have these Wera, which would be nice for both home and trackday use...

My Mrs got me one for a B/day present a few years ago, and as she often says it the most useful present she has got me.

Re: Memorable birthday present... toolage.
for that maybe consider one of these for £120...
admittedly the photoshop job putting the bike on the mover is shite but surely it's a simple design so should work just fine
