I look at most of these custom jobs you put up and think other people's comments area a little unfair, ok they don't improve on the original but they are reasonably ok.
This one on the other hand is hideous, it is generally ugly but the headlamp deserves a special mention as it looks expensive and ugly so people will point and laugh.

Like the bike, hate the paint job. Looks a bit ikea.

I'm not getting the excitement over the xsr when it comes to customising, there's millions of them.

To me the base bike looks like just another ujm, and not even one that lends itself to customising that much because the frame is too busy.

I'm with Deftrap on this. Can't see why people customise the 700 or 900 Yams.

I much prefer old skool when it comes to "customs"

I might treat it to a front brake though :banana-wrench:

Are there really enough people out there buying these things?
Tis a good question. I'm a fan of things like Gas Monkey which is i guess the car equivalent, but yeah, they sell the cars for CRAZY money. $100,000 cars are common place it seems if you watch these, so even if these bikes are $25,000 i can see them shifting. $30,000 sure, but getting above that, then i dunno really.

Thinking off the top of my head i thought of Russ Mitchell, the pretend gangster cockney wide boy who went state-side and builds bikes.

That's up for $35,000 but was $75,000

These guys state $12,500. But don't know if that includes donor bike.

BUt i'm actually struggling to find other info/prices on what things fetch.

When the Mt's and XSR's were first launched Yamaha really pushed them towards the custom builders, there was an official Yamaha competition 'Yard Built' and they gave bikes to all the big names to be customized.

The smaller builders probably just use them because they're relatively cheap.

I think my fave MT/XSR07 build is this one from Down and Out (and I'm not saying that because my office is about a mile away from them).

Have you ever watched Bitchin Rides? It's like Fast n Loud but with less cheese and more money. Their cars start at about $250,000 with a 2 year waiting list.

Might not be to all tastes but the execution is stunning.

I wouldn't call that stunning. The wheels are fucking horrible.

I mean the execution. Look how good the reflections are in the black paint, the panel gaps, the straightness of the bumpers etc.

I saw most of the Yard Build bikes in the metal I think, at a show. The imagination and execution were outstanding but I still say it's a poor choice of a base bike 'for custom building'.

I was speaking to a custom builder bloke, talking about how in theory you can customise anything, and in his words "what you need to do to the oe bike is keep taking the standard bits off until it starts to look less terrible". I would say that with the XSR you have to go further than most using that as a plan, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder after all. I'm sure it's a great bike to ride.

Taking the stock suspension and brakes and downgrading them 1980s/90s ones is proper commitment to the cause though.
