Is this an explosive

At the house in Coventry I've unearthed this while pulling up ivy along the fenceline.
Roughly 6in across.

Is it explosive...I ask mainly because of Coventry's rep in WW2.

It's a cake tin, I bet the crimbo cake inside has matured nicely.

It's a "drop". End of a bit of bar that's been machined off and chucked away. Probably off a big 'dozer or some giant Northern machine.

In other words, a solid lump of mild steel. Try hitting it with a hammer to see if it explodes.

Size, weight, any screw fittings in the side or bottom (an explosive device would need a fuse fitting which would usually be screwed in)?

I think DP is probably right unless it's just the weight of a cake tin and mouldy cake.

Because it's sitting on fresh leaves you must have lifted it and put it there, so is it heavy, and what does it look like underneath?

It doesn't look like a device containing an explosive substance, it looks like a lump of mild steel, if you grind it up into filings and find a way to make it burn fast enough it would be classed as an explosive, I can't remember whether iron filings are an explosive, but coal dust is.

Iron filings (or more specifally, rust) mixed with aluminium powder is basically Thermite.
Not exactly an explosive, more of an incendiary.

It's works when its suspended in the air, flour and quite a few other cumbustable dusts present the same danger and even my extractor has an antistatic hose to minimise the risk of a spark igniting the dust a router or saw makes.
More of a risk in drier climates than Cumbria mind.
