Chain lube/wax/paste

Having seen that I'd be inclined to agree with him.

I have a tutoro which I am using up all my old oils in. Over teh years I seem to have acquired a few part full bottles of old engine, fork ATF and gear oil in the shed and these are being recycled through it. Based on his video, once I've used these up i'll stick to gear oil in it from then onwards.

I've often thought similar...the chain is nominally self lubricating and fully sealed so why do you need lube?

Doesn't stop me putting WD40 chain wax on though.

I tend to use Wurth Dry Chain Lube but I use the Silkolene from time to time as dry chains still look a bit wrong, use GT85 to penetrate and shift grit before lubing. With modern chains I think most products work as anti corrosion and assist existing lubrication.
Some years back a chap told me he used marine grease, it would be impervious to moisture but a pain to clean.

Oh, as a side note though. I know its not for chains but that Scottoiler 365 bike protection stuff isn't great is it?

Nope, pretty shite IMO. XCP Rust Blocker is far more effective according to RiDE magazines tests (I'll try to dig them out if anyone's interested). Certainly in my own limited experience, XCP RB gives a very thick covering and does the job well but leaves on orange sticky residue behind which is a PITA to clean off. Took a lot of Bilt Hamber Surflex to remove it and then washing normally with shampoo. (I sprayed the XCP RB all over my engine and on any ally bolts so probably my own worst enemy.)

There is also XCP Clear Coat which is slightly less tacky, comes in an aerosol can and seems to do just as good a job as XCP RC but supposedly easier to clean off. This seems to e very similar to ACF50 but without the pigment.

If I was commuting regularly and only cleaning the bike at the end of Winter I'd probably use the Rust Blocker. Otherwise I think the Clear Coat and ACF do the job just as well but might need re-applying.

I'm another fan of engine oil as a lube but if I'm using chain lube it'll be Putoline dx11 , not because I think its any better than anything else but it was what my local off road dealer sold and I've found it low fling when used on a road bike.

TBF the Bonnie still has unsealed chain so I'm contemplating what to do on it. Sadly a sealed one is too wide, but theoretically you could go down a size and fit a sealed one, but it means new sprocket sizes too of course and a bit of jiggery pokery to make them sit correctly.

Or I could buy a can of that stuff.

That would have been a better option, but I discovered the joys of camping & cooking round about the time I switched to spray on lube.

I am of the same mind as Supermofo on the Wurth stuff- I never rated it or understood why so many mags seemed to.
I switched to Solkolene Pro Race , used it for years now on all my bikes and don't buy anything else.
Also comes in diddy little 100ml cans too, which is handy for long tours.

You're allowed to pull me up on stuff mate if it's deserved, it's deserved. But the chain didn't have any tight spots this time last year.... But over winter, i checked and it wasn't right, so it was binned.
