Torque wrenches mean slightly less than bugger all when you're dealing with a second hand bolt in a second hand hole with X years of gunk and corrosion in said hole. "FT" is sufficient for a wheel, as long as is doesn't come off you're basically fine Not to mention the fact your domestic torque wrench is probably +/- 25% on accuracy anyway.
As for getting them off at the roadside...my bosses old Porsche had centre lock wheels that had a special BFO socket under the bonnet. All very well and good, except the wheels are tightened to 450Nm, so your RAC man probably ain't getting them off

Assuming the Porche centre nuts were correctly left & right threaded then why on earth does it need to be done up that tight?Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Mon Mar 08, 2021 3:54 pmTorque wrenches mean slightly less than bugger all when you're dealing with a second hand bolt in a second hand hole with X years of gunk and corrosion in said hole. Well bolts are supposed to squish things together, the wheel primarily transmits torque to the hub via friction...that's the intent anyway. The "lumps" on the surface are back up.
So 1/5th the number of bolts means five times tighter, roughly speaking.

Torque wrenches certainly mean less than bugger all when you've previously done the bolt up with a windy gun, which was the main point of my post.Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Mon Mar 08, 2021 3:54 pm Torque wrenches mean slightly less than bugger all when you're dealing with a second hand bolt in a second hand hole with X years of gunk and corrosion in said hole. And I'm happy to use a torque wrench as an indicator of FT, even if it is a percent or two +/-.
Madness. But as I don't have a Porsche (and can't imagine I ever will) then it's all a bit moot. I'll stick with my breaker barMr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Mon Mar 08, 2021 3:54 pm As for getting them off at the roadside...my bosses old Porsche had centre lock wheels that had a special BFO socket under the bonnet. It's easy enough to test a torque wrench at home, all you need is a known weight, a ruler, a length of rope and a suitable pivot point.

It's much easier to test it horizontally, otherwise you have to allow for the change in leverage length.

A colleague of mine made me a sandwich with smoked pork roll homemade by her Romanian grandma.Noggin wrote: ↑Mon Mar 08, 2021 1:49 pm Migraines. Sodding migraines!!!
I haven't had one for months and omnths - I can't actually remember the last one!!
This one is winding up to be a doozy!! I can just about seeing out of one eye now the right one has zero vision cos of the lines wobbling across it. The left I can still see out of a bit. (Tis lucky I can touch type - mostly!!)
Sooo - physio in 45 mins and a french lesson at 18:00. Here's hoping that the historic way of solving it works today - although I have no ibuprofen, so have had to substitute something else! With taking the right meds the lines go away and the headache doesn't really arrive. Without, thelines eventually go away and then the headache is Biiiiiigg
If I'd ever worked out what causes them it wouldn't be so bad, but there's never been rhyme or reason for them arriving. I could get rid a bit quicker with a serious junk food sess - chocolate, sausage rolls, cake stuff like that. Don't have any here right now Buggeration!!!!
Lovely it was but an hour later I got the visual disturbance, no headache, lasted about 30 mins. 10 mins later another bout hit me, never had 2 in a row before.
When I do get the headache the only thing that works is sumatriptan.
Re: Insignificant/ Significant things that BYP or just wind you up a little
I just usually get the visual disturbances and I’ve only had a double on like that twice. After I get them I often feel sort of detached and out of sync with my surroundings, after the double one I felt like that for days!Gregor wrote: ↑Mon Mar 08, 2021 5:20 pm A colleague of mine made me a sandwich with smoked pork roll homemade by her Romanian grandma.

I don't know what sumatriptan is. I used to take Migraleve in the uk then my mother (who also used it) worked out that the ingredients were basically just paracetamol and ibuprofen (may have changed, this was a long time ago!!). So I used to always have a couple of doses of both in my bag, just in case. But as it's been soooooo long, I'd kinda forgotten about them
I'm lucky I've never had a double, but I feel like that for a few hours after a 'normal' one!!JamJar wrote: ↑Mon Mar 08, 2021 6:11 pmI just usually get the visual disturbances and I’ve only had a double on like that twice. Ooooo - I've got some of that - will put that in the bathroom cabinet instead of the meds box!! Much easier to get at when the eyes are inhibited!! I can normally sort out the visual disturbance with a combination of paracetamol and ibuprofen (the most you are allowed to take in one hit) and generally this prevents the headache too. I suspect the ibuprofen is necessary as I only had the paracetamol and Acupan (which is what I had in rehab - one of the few painkillers that worked) - although it sorted the eyes, I've got a headache 'thinking' about smacking my brain but it's dealable with. I'm a bit woozy tho Had to cancel the French lesson

Bollox, I always thought Migraleve were summat special. Seems they weren't
But on the bright side, I've not had an attack whilst living here. And barely even a headache reallyMigraleve pink tablets have a unique double action, providing short term relief from migraine headache and associated nausea and vomiting. If taken at the first sign of a migraine, Migraleve pink tablets can prevent an attack from developing. They contain a combination of paracetamol, codeine and buclizine. Migraleve yellow tablets provide relief for continuing migraine symptoms and should always be taken after your first dose of Migraleve pink tablets. The active ingredients in the yellow tablets are paracetamol and codeine, a powerful combination for pain relief.

Er, no it doesn't. It does it because the two components are clamped together by bolts. You're thinking of how brakes work. I think you're confusing fractions and multiples. Five times the number of bolts means five times the clamping force. Roughly speaking...Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Mon Mar 08, 2021 4:00 pm So 1/5th the number of bolts means five times tighter, roughly speaking.

Re: Insignificant/ Significant things that BYP or just wind you up a little
I used to get 'orrible migraines, visual stuff, massive headache and often sick. Only route out was to lie down and sleep, and I usually felt knackered for 48 hours after.
A few years back they switched to visual only stuff. The good new is they don't hurt, the bad news is I can get clusters of them, perhaps 4 or 5 in a day. Shutting my eyes is the only way out, sleeping is good. When they are bad I cannot read or look at a screen, and driving is for dire emergencies only - if I get one while driving I stop ASAP and try to sleep, even a few minutes will clear it.

Nice bit of sleight of hand there, but the discussion was about wheels and hubs, not clutches. If I altered my comment to read 'You're thinking of how brakes and clutches work" would that suit sir?Horse wrote: ↑Mon Mar 08, 2021 8:45 pmEver used a vehicle with a clutch? Re: Insignificant/ Significant things that BYP or just wind you up a little
And on a normal wheel the bolts are also the keys so transmit the turning force rather than relying on friction. Older cars with single hub nut had splines to transmit the force, Google tells me modern ones still have splines or pins and the nut like old cars is still just to hold the wheel in place.mangocrazy wrote: ↑Mon Mar 08, 2021 8:27 pmI missed this earlier.Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Mon Mar 08, 2021 4:00 pm Well bolts are supposed to squish things together, the wheel primarily transmits torque to the hub via friction...that's the intent anyway. So why do they need such massive torque when older cars were just hand tight and let physics do the rest? Maybe the wings on the old nuts were important and now they aren't allowed the self tightening won't work properly, or Porsche realised most of their customers are incapable of understanding a left hand thread.

I thought the old one were run up hand tight and then flogged with a hammer until tight.
