Top Gun

Cheesy as fuck but at the time i had been in the Air Cadets as a kid, loved bikes too, just finished my flying training and had a private pilots license as a teenager all ready to go. Went off down to Biggin Hill full of being a fast jet pilot, aced the flying aptitude tests but failed on the final interview as i wasnt deemed as "Officer Material" as my "worldwide politics and current affairs knowledge wasnt up to standard"

Seriously fucked off at the time but life changed and ended up having a superb career elsewhere

The Name of the Rose - a mediaeval detective story and the film that revived Sean Connery's career.

Some other films from the 1980’s that may jog a few memories.

Betty Blue: 37°2 Degrees In The Morning

Who cares what they say about the acting abilities of Béatrice Dalle? In this film she carried the role off perfectly. The film captured every emotion and didn't stall for a moment. In a nutshell: it was a roller coaster of a film - both exciting and sad. The director Jean-Jacques Beineix was an odd character but very inventive. I feel quite tearful remembering the final scenes.

The Blues Brothers.

I think this classic comedy has become a seasonal goody. Terrific acting, madcap chases and a fantastic sound track from the men on ‘A Mission From God’.

Cinema Paradiso.

I’ve lost count of the times I have watched this beautiful light hearted film - directed by Giuseppe Tornatore - with a stellar performance by Philippe Noiret. A film you can get lost in because of the exquisite landscape, sets and photography. I wish he would make some more films. I have all he has made. I rate this in my top two of all time along with Il Postino

Diva

One of the French cinéma du look films directed by Jean-Jacques Beineix which is now a ‘cult film’. Noted for its extended motorcycle chase scene and the soundtrack. Wilhelmina Wiggins Fernandez singing excerpts from La Wally gives this unpredictable thriller an extra edge along with the portrayal of the obsessive, flattened expression Jules - performed by Frédéric Andréi.

I’ll finish with a British film - no, not 1984, of which a version was released in 1984 by Michael Radford but rather a film with the late Albert Finney and Tom Courtenay.

The Dresser

Winner of many awards, Finney and Courtenay act their hearts out to give spellbinding performances. It only goes to show that you don’t need bells, whistles, explosions and CGI to keep transfixed to the screen. Just a damn fine script and an outstanding cast. So outstanding you actually forget they are acting!

So many good films were made in the ‘80’s and that is without mentioning the seminal Jean De Florette. Too many to choose from just for one film to be the best.

😊

It was only recently that I caught up with this film. Brilliant! First class acting and a memorable script.

“We want the finest wines available to humanity! We want them here and we want them now!”

“I have of late, but wherefore I know not, lost all my mirth. And indeed it goes so heavily with my disposition that this goodly frame, the earth, seems to me a sterile promontory. This most excellent canopy, the air, look you, this brave o'erhanging firmament, this majestical roof fretted with golden fire, why, it appeareth nothing to me but a foul and pestilent congregation of vapours. What a piece of work is a man! How noble in reason! How infinite in faculties! How like an angel in apprehension. How like a god! The beauty of the world! The paragon of animals! And yet, to me, what is this quintessence of dust? Man delights not me, no, nor women neither, though by your smiling you seem to say so.”

Bravo!

Almost impossible to choose, but has to be Withnail.

Yes, it's a 'cult' film, students like watching it while drinking and sad people (like me) will constantly quote it, but all that actually detracts from what is actually a near-perfect film. It's moving, thought-provoking, desperately sad and very funny. The script, characterisations and acting are all incredible.

10/10, would recommend.

The 80s was a great decade for films, so many good ones, but if I had to pick just one, it would be Pulp Fiction.
Still in my top 3 films ever

Edit: Err.. Except I've just re-thought and realised it was in the 90s... :P
