As long as it represents the Circular Economy in some way I am prepared to compromise on the food. There shall be no such leniency with the Renault Twangos however.

Found out why they don't use anti-ice systems similar to that used on aircraft props on wind turbines...
They start throwing car-sized lumps of ice around the scenery, become catastrophically unbalanced & then shed the blades as they destroy themselves.

Wind power contributed 20% of UK electricity generation in 2019, making up 54% of electricity generation from renewable sources. Polling of public opinion consistently shows strong support for wind power in the UK, with nearly three quarters of the population agreeing with its use, even for people living near onshore wind turbines. Wind power in the UK is a low cost generation mode which is still dropping in price and delivers a rapidly growing percentage of the electricity of the United Kingdom.

You know...not really considered that before.

I suppose they leave 'em switched off when the weather is cold enough for ice and wait for it to warm up. I'd be surprised if they don't have imbalance detection to stop them spinning if they're all off kilter. I bet they have some sort of 'non stick' paint on them too.

Surely anti ice systems prevent the build up - I can see how a pneumatic boot might dislodge chunks, but a heated leading edge linked to atmospheric conditions... ?

Heated carbon pad apparently.

I bet they don't use the power from the turbine itself for it though. :D

They don't even use the power from the turbine to operate the brake that stops them turning, so when they are *off* they consume power from elsewhere...

They contribute the fat end of sweet fuck all when they're frozen solid... or when the wind isn't sufficient... so basically we still need nuclear/coal/oil etc that is capable of supplying 100% of the need when the weather doesn't cooperate... As Calizuela (& now Texas) know.
and solar doesn't work too well when the panels are covered with snow...

Solar panels might not work when covered in snow but just imagine if someone used something like a brush to...well brush it off? Come on youre brighter than this.

In other news, Siberia now has solar farms.
"In addition to the plants that are a part of Russia's unified energy system, there are also solar power plants that function autonomously. For example, the solar farm in the Siberian village of Menza (3,800 miles east of Moscow) provides energy for three remote settlements, and the autonomous solar power plant in the village of Yailyu in Altai (2,500 miles east of Moscow) is more favorable for local residents than the old diesel generator. There is also a small plant on the famous island of Valaam (646 miles north of Moscow), which provides energy for the monastery's greenhouses. "

If you think I'm getting up on the roof to clean snow off the panels you are sorely mistook...
Calizuela now has a *law* that all new homes must have solar... but not enough to actually be of any fucking use (except keep the lights on) & when the power gets shut off because of the wind or rolling brown-outs.. the power company turns off your solar panels too...

Luckily, someone has a solution: get rid of the blades!

That sounds interesting, do you have any videos about it?

The big one I keep an eye on is an Enercon machine and has a lot of sensors dotted about the place, vibration, noise etc and will send warnings to the control centre if there's anything amiss.

Enercon machine are gearboxless, they're the ones with the egg shaped nacelle, not just a box on a stick. The most visible one in the UK is near Reading, and ther's one in Norfolk IIRC with a viewing platform.

Being gearboxless they are much simpler mechanically and much cleaner in the nacelle. They are also AFAIK less likely to go on fire as there's no gearbox oil splashing about near hot components up top. They're a bit more complex electrically though.

The Canadian solution to the problem of being hit by chunks of falling ice while carrying out de-icing work is brilliantly simple. :D

MG are doing 0% PCP on these at the moment.

Seems like a lot of car for the money and the EV part would certainly cover my commute.

They get quite reasonable reviews... for a Chinese MG.

The Norfolk in at Swaffham.

Aircon machines another gearboxless design, they used the old Enercon design of nacelle, concentric cylinders on a common axis. There's one just south of Glasgow.

Another advantage of gearboxless is there are no transmission losses from the drive system or gearbox oil I don't think the US have any because of a patent dispute, protectionism, or the design being a bit too advanced for a third world country with a failing infrastructure . Pick one of the three to suit your bias.
