Driving a van is liking going to the tip for me. I get to call people I don't know "mate" or "boss" and I can generally man handle stuff and pretend that I'm not the soft palmed office nancy I really am. But it's not for me long term.

Flo the Mk6 Transit was worth buttons, only made 75bhp (non-intercooler version) and had a hooky MOT due to being so rusty.

I used to go to work in her despite having a 330i Coupe at the time, that was when I could prise it away from the wife. I think she cried when we sold her!

I only bought it to go bike racing.



They're just a pain to park in car spots, they won't let you in the tip in one and they don't give you the kudos a German saloon does in the office car park.

One of my spawn went to a private school for a couple of years, the reverse snob in my took pride in parking my van amongst the toity mobiles and scrappers* on social days. I also got directed round the back by the car park attendant until I pointed out I was there as a parent. Pikeys might wear hats but rarely a collar and tie.

*An interesting mix of cars, Rolls Royces, old landrovers, high end sports cars, 1980s cars that were still going so why replace it and WAG style 4x4s. And me in a Renault Trafic running biodiesel.

anything 4X4 related when theres snow on the ground is usually an inflated pricethat said there are lots of disco threes sub 4K with lots of kit, yes theyre a money pit but its all do-able stuff if your handy, they are solid good off road and nice to drive (IMO) MAnual ones are more frugal and mines doen 195 000 And the engines still good, with full service history. Clutches are weak but a well maintained they're not bad as a cheapy. And they are cheap.

Honda Diary, day 1

Its going to take me months to work out exactly what all the buttons do and acronyms mean. By the time I got home yesterday my windscreen washer jets had stopped working. It was going to be my first gripe. Stopped at Halfods, filled up the washer fluid (it was aleady full), run my thumb over the jet nozzles (because that'll fix it) got back in the car, I could hear the pump - nothing. I found a dial that turns the jets up and down on the control I'm going to throw my washing on the backseat tomorrow and by the time I arrive I'm expecting it to be washed, dried and ironed.

I don't, my 50 pencing of corners is legendary! I was referring to people who do, be those bends on a track or some amazing B-roads somewhere? A dsg type box is better everywhere. Go into any supercar showroom and manual boxes will be very rare to find as it's old hat technology. I don't think MCLaren have even offered a manual as an option?

IIRC dual clutch autos had huge problems when they came out especially with more powerful engines, putting dry clutches in them was a bad mistake as people drove them like a slushbox and burnt the clutches, bigger engines just burnt the clutches whatever.
Wet clutches work much better but mean they get 0.001mpg less and sales guys don't like that so many stuck with dry clutches.

They may have improved recently but I don't trust them yet, manufacturers seem happy to roll out poorly designed tech if it looks good in marketing stuff.

Apart from that all autos are undesirable in corners, changing gear mid corner is going to throw the car off balance and if you are driving quickly you really don't want that to happen. Manual override helps that but there are still cars around with manual override that still gets overridden by the computer.

Aren't they nearly all made by the same company (Gertrag) certainly Mitsubishi and VW/Audi use the same flappy paddle gearboxes - Mitsubishi Evos over 300bhp have manual boxes because the TCTS wasn't strong enough.

Just bought a Ford Kuga with Ford (Getrag?) dual clutch auto system which is called "Powershift". It also has Ford's own AWD system which I think is the same as in the naughty Focus RS. It's simply a comfortable tool for carrying kitesurfing gear, mountain bikes, garden waste, pulling a caravan. Bought it with 4 years warranty to get me into the full electric era. If I want fun I ride two wheels, or even better no wheels.

My mates wife has an old Honda CRV with 230,000 miles on it, it’s epically reliable and feels like it’s got another 200k still left in it. He and I use it to collect bikes as it has a tow bar and, apart from being pretty slow, it’s hard to fault. Best of all the load compartment floor has fold out legs and doubles up as a picnic table.... well maybe that’s not the best, but still, it’s a car with a table!

Not sure how much the Kuga 4WD has in common with the RS, but we had 3 Kugas on the trot when my missus worked for Ford, and she loved them. All were auto/4WD/ST-line spec (so stiffer suspension) which all the reviews say ruins the ride, but actually the combo of that with the 4WD made them handle really quite nicely I thought. Not quite a Fiesta or anything, but you could throw them around quite enjoyably.

Since leaving Ford we've replaced them with an L200 and Navara over the years, both of which are hateful, joyless things in my book. They're built to do a job of course (tow shit and lug shit) and they do that admirably, but they squeeze every ounce of dullness out of driving while they do it.

We're looking to get rid of the Navara soon (thank fuck) and out of everything in the world, my missus wants... another Kuga. Exactly the same as the ones she had before, not even the new model. I've tried to get her to at least look at alternatives but she's adamant.

I have the Titanium version with power lift back door etc. Wife has an A3 which works for her but it's too much of a bum dragger for me.

Had to buy something because after 10 years from new (and properly serviced) my L200 cam belt failed taking out the top end. It then had a professional top end rebuild a year ago, but last month the engine seized. Should have sold it after the first repair, but sold it 'as is' and walked away. Had never driven a Kuga but it does do exactly what we want. Only problem is that I can't carry a couple of supermotos on the back but if I need to I'll get a small bike trailer.

The 3rd generation did away with the picnic table and hid the spare wheel under the boot instead. And yes, it's slower than it looks but I won't be telling anyone that

I stopped at my local mechanics/friends yesterday and one of them said that he had a CRV with over 500k and it was fine. When I mentioned that I was thinking of getting one they said "Great car! We never see 'em". So long as its well maintained (and I have every intention of it being that) it's only really the suspension that may need work sometime and apparently the tyre pressure sensors may fail, awww. It's got a yearly stamp in the servicing book. I can't believe my luck

Long gone! I really liked it but it had that dead throttle thing they suffer from and it got on my nerves one time too many! Wife has a Mini Cooper and me a e93 and we struggle without a 4 seater. Been thinking about adding a "taxi/shopper" for a while now. Something like a CRV would be a lot easier for my StepDad to get in as he's disabled. That ones literally a stones throw away from me...

Yes they are and there are lots about. I wanted an EX for the leather seats and extras. The 3rd gen from 2007 is, IMO, a better shape and bigger than it's predecessor.
