Since you asked my thoughts are as follows as I've always preferred the UI of phpBB forums.
https://revtothelimit.co.uk/ phpBB Brilliant.
https://pbmagforum.co.uk/ : Invision Shite
https://www.fz09.org/ : Xenforo Shite
https://www.ktmforums.com/ : Xenforo Shite
https://www.adventuremotorcycles.net/forum/ : Invision Shite

Re: Forum design, layout, structure, thoughts ?
Don't think for a second here there's an agenda.
Fwiw and putting my actual opinion here now, I'm 100% in favour of phpbb. But I wanted to get your thoughts too. If you guys were not happy then I'd have looked into it.
There's thoughts that phpbb is a bit of a dinosaur in terms of forums, a bit old technology and knowing the vast majority of you guys I'm not shocked that the desire is for us to stick with it.
As an Admin I only have 1 complaint with it and that's regarding permissions, it's crap. But as we all have the same permissions it doesn't actually matter 99% of times.
I don't greatly want the social media based platforms the others seem to be, so we'll stick with what we have and stay on out happy trail in the big internet world.

Re: Forum design, layout, structure, thoughts ?
For me its fine as it is, the only thing I'm not blown away by is the way when I'm posting and someone else fires a post on a thread it asks me if I want to read theirs before I submit. Kind of gets on my tits a bit and so far I've not mananged to find where to knock that feature off.
As for the other two types of forums? Never even heard of them so can't really comment.

Just looking on the front page might help if I'd used any of those forums but I havent.
Anyway, I'm still OK with this setup. From my end it pretty much just works.

If I do a search, I have to hit 'search' twice separately.

I would say don't fix it unless there's a real chance of vulnerability (security, other changes from supporting systems) or you have a burning desire to do something different with it.
I totally get the desire to follow the fashion and freshen things up btw if that's what you're into.

How?
Look at the other forums linked, they're made using other software, do you prefer the style of theirs or of this?
