Haven't visited this thread for a while so have missed a few pages. A mate has just got a Skoda Yeti 4x4 which he paid £5k for and is in fantastic condition. He absolutely loves it, treats it like a skip - constantly throwing bikes/boards/family in and out of it and reckons it's reliable, bomb-proof and a good enough car to drive. Not sure if they get down to your £4k budget but worth a look?

I could go up but 4x4 4 5 didn't sound as good as 4x4 4 4. I'm going to look at a CRV on Sunday with a view to driving it home if it is what they say it is. Check back on Monday

V8 FTW!
And registered before the big engine tax came in.
Its in Leeds. I'm in Brighton. Delivery charges vary and when buying an old car I'd really like to look at it first. That though, is a bargain.

I'm going to look at this on Sunday.

Steer clear of anything like the ML, the Honda looks a far better buy.
When Merc & BMW started getting into the 4x4 market (2000 ish) they punted out an image, they both bought companies with a lot of 4x4 experience but seemed to ignore it and made very expensive 4x4 shaped cars. 4k for that ML seems way more than it's worth and the dealer probably bought it for scrap.

Had 2 CRVs in the past, one was just like the one you linked to but 2010 and manual, and the it's predessor which was the previous gen, a 2001 - both were the 1.8 petrol and manual.
The early one was a cracker, plodded on for 150k miles with nothing other than regular servicing, tyres, a battery, and a few suspension bushes (it was driven down real rough country lanes with 4 dogs in the boot every day of its life), cleaned up well and was still going strong when it was replaced.

THe 2010 one had more space inside, was more nicely fitted out, and was just as good in terms of reliability, but the engine was a disappointment over the earlier one- really flat and gutless in the mid-range compared to the earlier gen- a dull engine that needed a lot more down changes and revving loads more, and probably as a result, was a fair bit worse on fuel too
Guess it depends what you're used to, but my Ex (who's car it was) never bonded with it in the same way as the first one, for just that reason.

I drilled down to the EX model, petrol. I think I said this previously but there are so many fors and againsts transmission that I don't care other than I wanted to avoid CVT which probably wouldn't have come into it with the age of the vehicles I've been looking at.

Leather upholstery is a must, panoramic sun roof, satnav, Bluetooth and the rear view camera means I won't accidentally knock any scooters over.

The one I'm going to see comes with 12 months MOT and 3 months warranty (shhhhh he's going to let me test drive it) and I won't be so precious with it that I'm afraid to chuck junk and broken fridges in the back.

I liked the look of this one (very low mileage) but when I phoned them they practically answered with "Hello. We're not budging on the price, there's no warranty, we're a Mercedes main dealer don't you know, we took it part exchange and there's a £300 admin fee and no, you can't take it for a test drive, in fact we don't really want you or it on our forecourt".

I have the 2l EX auto in the next gen up (62 plate) with the 'Eco' option. I keep this on all the time in and around town, as it's not at all intrusive and it keeps the MPG as sensible as it can be for a heavy brick on wheels. My only issue is on the motorway if I need to overtake, so sometimes I switch off the Eco setting, if I can be arsed. If it really was an issue, I'd simply put the box in 'S' or use the flappy-paddles, but most of the time I set the cruise to 70 and relax.
I'm at that stage of life where if I'm late for something, they'll just have to bloody-well wait 'til I get there. I ain't rushing for anybody. :P

For an old 4k motor I'd be spending a couple of hundred getting a comprehensive check on it from the RAC, AA etc. In the past that has:
1) Saved me from a bad mistake
2) Got the dealer to fix stuff before I hand over any cash
3) Indicated what I may need to pay out for in the next couple of years.

Don't trust the dealer or his warranties, even if he's not dishonest he won't have gone looking for problems.

Good advice.

I'm taking someone who knows about engines/cars/SUVs with me. A good friend who won't be afraid to put me in handcuffs and walk me away if there's anything suspicious.

Don't know if it's a common issue, but a groan from the back end is probably the diff oil wanting changing. Scared the shit out of me when I first heard it, but a very quick fix.

I loved my CR-V. Sadly it was a manual with a squeaky clutch pedal... I didn't keep it a fortnight.

So. I didn't buy the one in I linked to in AutoTrader (same dealer).

I bought this one instead.

2008, Petrol, Manual, 91k, EX (with all the trimmings) just under 5k, bronze/black. Had fun driving back in the snow - no slips, slides, wiggles or wobbles. Pretty boring really (I am such a happy bunny right now). My card's behind the bar again - thanks for all your help XXX

I'm tempted to buy a 4x4/SUV, my new commute to work is all single carriageway stuff packed with traffic and bumpy as fuck. I'm lucky to see the spoiler rise on my JCW (@50mph) and the suspension is killing me, Swapping the RFT's for proper tyres might help, but something like the CRV does appeal, I'm not a boy racer anymore. I'd happily swap a 6 second 0-60 for something that doesn't shatter my spine.

You don't need a 4x4 for that, just something that isn't a silly mini hot hatch. In fact a modern 4x4 with honking great 38" wheels that are a foot across probably ain't even as nice as a 5 series.

If you want old man ride get a Jaaaag.

Be aware that the 3 month warranty is in addition to your legal rights

From Citizens Advice.

If you can prove the car was faulty when you bought it, the trader must pay for a repair.
You have legal rights for up to 6 years (5 years if you bought the car in Scotland), but only if you can show that you didn’t cause the fault. The longer you’ve had the car, the harder it will be to prove that the problem was there when the trader sold it to you.

Plus, you’ll only have legal rights if the car is not:

‘of satisfactory quality’ - it should do what you’d expect for its age, mileage, price and type
‘fit for purpose’ - eg if you asked for a car that would pull a caravan, it has to be able to do that
‘as described’ - it has to match the advert or the description the trader gave.

Generally speaking, if you can see/hear the fault, or were told about it you are stuffed.
If it is something you couldn't have seen you have a fairly good claim for getting it fixed for 12 months, maybe more on a newish low mileage car.
Assuming it isn't a 200k mile shed sold for £100, in which case you should know it is a dog.

Personally I mistrust any dealer offering a 3 month warranty.

Actually, I quite fancy an E class but I'm not sure I'm quite that old yet, so maybe a 5er is just the job, but I do like driving vans, SUV's are like vans, right?
