I'm getting old. I keep watching Bangers and Cash on the Yesterday Channel.

Purely hypothetical if you had some cash that you didn't want to spend on bikes, or drugs and hookers, say 5-10k and you fancied a 'classic' car, for going to shows (if that's your thing) or just just for the sake of owning something cool and classic, what would you buy?

I've been looking at Riley Elf's and Wolseley Hornets, mega cool imho, but then there's Triumph Heralds and Ford Anglia's.

So what's the best (looking or performance or coolest) pre-80's car for 10k?

Remember to keep a bit in reserve for urgent repairs you find soon after you buy it, look for a fresh MOT and look at the advisories carefully.
I found with an MGB that it needed stuff doing regularly, the shocks were annual but after I'd replaced them once it was a fairly easy and cheap job to do. The nasty surprise will be hidden rust, people often get outside bits replaced and leave the rest hidden. I did as much body work as mechanical, plenty of both but it was OK as I enjoyed it.
The MG's performance and handling were closely matched by a Nissan Micra but it was fun to drive apart from when the weak fuel pump meant I ran out of steam on long hills.
Get something with a good supply of spares, you'll need them. You won't get anything exotic on your budget or if you do it will soon cost you an arm and leg in repairs.

I might have another Triumph Stag, if the leccys have been sorted properly (the one I had refused to start at the first sign of rain and was my only transport at the time so I only kept it for a couple of months)
