The KLR650 is back
Kawasaki's timeless KLR650 is back... in the USA at least.
But with an ABS option and fuel injection, maybe - just maybe - it might head this way?
It's not an unreasonable price, and I could be tempted... I've always liked big singles.

Wot 'e sed. ^
Much as I like Kawasakis, that's a terrible weight for the poor engine.

The love the KLR650 out there, massive cult following and loads of overland mods available.

Because it's not all about high speed / going as fast as you can.

Re: The KLR650 is back
The Royal Enfield Himalayan puts out 24 bhp and is only 20 kg lighter and there are overland tourers who rave about them as perfect for the job. Enough power to keep up with traffic on motorways but small enough and nimble enough to negotiate goat tracks without worruing about picking the bugger up when you drop it
I remember when they first came out they were popular all over Europe but completely shunned in the UK as the market then was for sports bikes and any form of ADV bike was what those weirdos in France rode

Re: The KLR650 is back
That 38bhp is claimed and very optimistic, the original ones were very slow and they weighed less than that

Looks like its wearing the right clothes for its market tbh. I suspect plenty if people will be all over that.

A mate used to have a KL600 (i think that was the model name) demon of a thing with him on it. He rode my KLR650 and said something along the lines of they've fucked that up then!

Fancy a world wide trip on yours ??
She did India, all round Asia, crossed to Oman and then through the Stans, Turkey, the Balkans and back to Holland on her 25 BHP 200 kg (without all the luggage and add ons) RE Himalayan on her tod and smiling all the way
For those who want to know more about Noraly here is her You Tube channel ...... i have watched her first trip, now on season 2
I stumbled across the channel as she visited the Dutch Police and looked at their bike training and i had seen some of their high speed escort stuff before and in current occupation wanted to get a look at their training methods

Re: The KLR650 is back
The power and weight is an arbitrary personal measure that either you're ok with or you're not.
The thing for me on something like that is how much of a price is it built to and will it actually last for a long trip. I think the appeal with the RE is it can be fixed by a roadside Indian workshop without sophisticated diagnostic kit - will the Kawasaki be the same or a mess of electronics like most new bikes.
FWIW on the RE Himalayan I have two mates with them here and they love them, one of them has ridden all through northern Pakistan on one and reckons it's the best thing ever, so he bought one here as well.

Re: The KLR650 is back
If I was doing long distance touring I'd choose comfort over off road ability, I've done some long distances on trail bikes and it really isn't fun, and you don't need enduro suspension to ride down a dirt track, most commuter bikes would make better round the world bikes than trail bikes.
